[BUG] Computer frozen and on reboot i am missing ethernet device

#1

Post by postcd » Sun Jan 06, 2019 3:39 pm

Hello,

i am having
Linux lynx 4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.4-1~mx17+1 (2018-02-23) x86_64 GNU/Linux

the computer got frozen (under Liquorix kernel, it works well, i am just saying, i do not think this is kernel problem) so i reset it (into MX kernel with systemd) and now i see that i can not connect ethernet.

Code: Select all

$ nmcli connection show
NAME UUID TYPE DEVICE
MyHotspotName ***stringHere** 802-11-wireless wlan0
tun0 ***stringHere** tun tun0
Ethernet connection 1 ***stringHere** 802-3-ethernet --

$ nmcli connection up "Ethernet connection 1"
Error: Connection activation failed: No suitable device found for this connection.
ifconfig shows lo, tun, wan interfaces

inxi -Fz shows:

Code: Select all

Network: Message: No Device data found.
Device-1: Ralink MT7601U Wireless Adapter type: USB driver: mt7601u
IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter>
IF-ID-1: tun0 state: unknown speed: 10 Mbps duplex: full mac: N/A

Wireless connection is made by USB wifi dongle.

For an experiment, what happens when you start without systemd?

Does the wired NIC appear in a Live session? Can you get the "System Information" from the menu and post it here in code tags?

I started OS (4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.4-1~mx17+1 + systemd), i have not verified if network working, and then i pushed sleep button.
After wake up networking not working:

I tried to reboot (into same default MX17.1 kernel with systemd) to see it connected to my ethernet (yes it did), then i tried to click PC power button to go to sleep, after awake again networking device not worked as described above. So i can reproduce this.

Then i booted into non systemd MX17.1 kernel and this issue was NOT there after awaking PC. But i can not use non systemd MX because i already reported that it is unable to sleep my PC when i have mounted all VeraCrypt devices (viewtopic.php?f=108&t=46855). But this time i mounted only one not opening any apps and tried to sleep, after awaking volume was dismounted and this is not acceptable.

How about if you unload and reload the driver?

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod r8169
sudo modprobe r8169
It sounds similar to the wireless problems after resume I and others have solved with this procedure:

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/networking/wifi-suspend-issues

But I seem to recall that the procedure might be different for systemd...

Somehow, logged in as a user, MXLinux was not installing some updates for me via GUI installer, i logged in as root and then GUI updater updated everything (dist-upgrade) and after restart i see the issue no longer appear (MX Linux 17.1 + systemd)

ISSUE REMAINS (though there is a workaround) thanks to Stevo

After i booted computer today using "Linux lynx 4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.4-1~mx17+1" + Systemd
and worked a while and first time pushed power button (triggers suspend action), it appears like not proceed into suspended state so i moved a mouse and it shown login prompt, then so i logged in and clicked menu logout/suspend. The on-screen suspend button remained pushed and like 15 seconds, nothing, then when i came back to PC later it was suspended, upon un-suspending network was off and again no ehternet device as described above.

The mentioned commands:
sudo rmmod r8169
sudo modprobe r8169

WORKED to get network device up. (my system specs are in my signature)

Did you try adding the driver to a config file as in the wiki link yet?
