FYI: I have also experienced this issue with a "bad background picture" for an user ... So maybe you can also use, to test first, a standard background picture.

So it is probably not this problem. I had this issue when switching to a particular user via Ctrl+Alt F8, F9 , who had a custom wallpaper into the ~/Image directory (but not each times).

This morning, I gave the mouse a wiggle and the desktop appears from the black screen. I had the new memory installed, but only 4 GB.
It can be very important to use matching RAM. I once bought some Kingston HyperX DDR2 to upgrade the currently installed RAM. It had exactly the same brand and specs but were manufactured almost a year apart. The old RAM booted fine by itself as did the new RAM. No way would they work when installed together.

I purchased 4 2GB package of RAM. We'll see if this rectified my problem after I reinstall it. Your story sounds like mine. I had Corsair RAM right from the build. Then tried to purchase the exact make, specs, everything, yet the computer continued to have problems with the new RAM, but not the new.

So far the new installation seems to be working. I reconnected the 2 other hard drives up to the system. Then tried to open Disk Manager, but nothing would happen other than the RAM would bounce up to 100%. Disconnected one of the drives and Disk Manager opens and works. Perhaps a bad drive. Wouldn't be the first one!
