Black Screen of Death

#1 Post by smilliken » Sun Sep 30, 2018 4:25 pm

I'm posting here as I'm using MX Linux. I'm running version 17.1 and it is all up to date. It is installed on a system that is using an Asus P5QL-Pro Motherboard with 4 GB of RAM and an Intel i5 6600. When this first started I was installing some new memory, upgrading to 8 GB. I thought I was have a bad memory issue, but I've since then tried some other (new) memory and still get the black screen.

Now the black screen only happens after the computer boots up, I sign in and have been sitting at an idle state for some time. How long I'm not sure as at first I thought the computer had gone to a screen saver black screen, but I then removed the screen saver from being active.

I've searched the web and found something said to place "nomodeset" booting line to remove the black screen, but that hasn't worked either.

Is there some logs or something to see what might happening? I noticed in the BIOS, the temperature for the CPU was at 25 C, but that was only after booting into the BIOS.

Any other things to check, let me know.

Thanks,

Scott

Did you install MX Linux with known good RAM? Also does moving the mouse of clicking the mouse take you out of that black screen?

Now that is a good question. I'm not sure. I wonder I should re-install with the new memory I just purchased.

No, nothing seems to help. Keyboard or mouse.

memtest from LiveUSB boot?
check / verify that both old new RAM have identical RAM-timings ( CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS-CMD )?
If available check in BIOS supported timings.
Can you boot into Console run level 3 , without issues (with boot parameter number 3)?

It's starting to look like a bad installation of MX Linux. Since you have an ASUS motherboard pay close attention to bad RAM alert sounds from the motherboard. Also check the ckecksum of the ISO you downloaded as it could be a bad copy. If it's not the RAM or a bad ISO check your HHD condition.

I'll go back to the basics. Download another image check the hard drive and start with my new memory.

Thanks for some starting points.

Check logs in /var/log/ especially Xorg.0.log, and also ~/.xsession-errors although it usually has stacks of irrelevant messages.
Try running MX live from a USB stick for a while. If it's OK it may be your installation, if not it may be hardware.

When your screen blacks out, have you tried switching to a text console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), then back to the graphical desktop (Ctrl-Alt-F7) ?
This forces a switching of graphical mode which sometimes re-initialises a misbehaving GPU...

No, never thought to try these commands. Thanks for the tip.

I did boot the computer with a new download of the of MX Linux version 17.1 and just booted to the desktop, added the wifi to it and let sit for night. This morning, I gave the mouse a wiggle and the desktop appears from the black screen. I had the new memory installed, but only 4 GB.

So, it would appear there may actually be something wrong with the install.

Is this about wakeup from suspense seeing black screen?
If yes, do try to use pm-suspend instead of xfce default supense, as this wakes up a bit differently... might be :=)
