Brother MFC-J480DW printer scans OK, but will not print.

#1 Post by ken moreau » Tue Sep 11, 2018 2:31 pm

I have recently installed MX-17 on a separate HD in my Desktop tower. I then updated and installed the three Linux printer files from Brother for my printer. On another HD, I have installed Linux Mint 19. Both distros have the same printer drivers and scan file installed. The Brother printer works well with Mint ...all functions. The printer will scan and save the scan on the MX-17 distro, but will not print. I have re-intstalled, and re configured, and booted with systemd...cannot get printer to respond. It will scan and the scanner program says the printer is rejecting data. attached is a system printout.

Files were downloaded from the Brother support site and copied from the LM19 HD. They were installed with the Gdebi package installer.

There have been some symlink issues in the past, but I'm think with latest installation, they fixed it.
Weill recheck , let me see tomorrow. Are you using USB / wifi or ethernat for printing?

USB. I print using the same connection from LM19 and everything is fine ...I even thought it might be a permissions issue and went ahead and joined all the related system and admin groups, but still same problem.

I had the same problem and know the fix for this. Install gThumb and remove Nomacs.

Those are exactly the identical files I would get, running my own installer-script.
Have you double checked the device-URI within the Printer-Settings is set poperly.
Just in case the default "usb:/dev/usb/lp0" after installation with gdebi was not adjusted.
Turn on the printer. Open Printer Settings (Configure printer)
right click on MFCJ480DW -> Properties -> Settings
Device URI: click Change and select the found USB-printer.
Print Test Page.
If the printer is found but still not printing.
Do this:
Remove the "MFCJ480DW" with Printer settings,
and add "New Printer" -> select the found USB-Printer "MFCJ480DW" again.
This procedure sometime clears blocking elements with the whole printer-queue.

Just tried all of your suggestions. I have been thru those several times before. no change in the situation. . I'm thinking of trying a new install of MX-17.1 and installing the printer before the major upgrade. Thanks for the support.

Update: I took my time, downloaded a new ISO of MX-17.1. Checked the hash. Burned the ISO onto a usb stick. Booted up the live MX17.1. Installed on the 160GB HD. Clean install ...no problems. re-downloaded the three Brother fiies from the Brother support site. Installed with the Gdebi installer, first the main driver, then the cups wrapper, then the scan file. Set up the printer as the first setup on the new install.Double checked everything. Still the same problem. Will scan and not print. I'm now of the opinion that MX-17.1 is incompatible with the newish Gigabite motherboard I have installed. This motherboard is a recent thing after my old Biostar blew up in an electrical storm. I'll leave the install on the HD. Maybe someone has better advice, In the meantime, I'll be on Linux Mint. Thanks for the support.
