no wifi on dell laptop

#1 Post by mmikeinsantarosa » Sat Sep 01, 2018 7:43 pm

I'd been running MX15 on my wife's retired Dell Latitude laptop and figured I'd upgrade it to MX 17. So I did that last Saturday and all was well. I put nomachine on it Sunday, did a little browsing and shut it down. I fired it up today and wifi wouldn't connect. So I removed nomachine and still no wifi. Since there wasn't anything on it yet, I reinstalled the August MX17 monthly release and still no wifi. Looking for ideas.

Mike,

Check out, on the right side, for a mechanical switch. It will turn on/off the wifi. Most Dell laptops have this switch (not obvious).

Thanks Siles but it's on. If I flip it to it's other position I can't see any networks.

check in network-assistant and see if there is a soft-block in place.

I tried booting from an MX16 live usb and no wifi there either.
I can see other networks so it doesn't appear to be broken.

Hmmm..can't be a driver issue, since it was working with the "wl" driver when you first installed MX 17. There's always the possibility that it something in it just broke right then.

Can you get it to work at all with any other Live ISOs that include non-free firmware? (though if that chip only works with the "wl" broadcom-sta driver, that may be pretty hard, many distros don't ship the modules).

I'm calling this one unresolved and will run with the Mobile BB adapter checked to connect automatically. The rj45 ethernet adapter still works too so it is still quite usable.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to upgrade the BIOS.
I found the latest windows .exe to do that with but am stumbling to get a DOS thumbdrive to boot with the .exe on it.

I'll start a new thread for that.

thanks for the tips - mike
