Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9123 PCIe SATA 6.0 Gb/s controller

#1 Post by galaxysurfer » Sun Aug 05, 2018 4:53 pm

Hi,

I have Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9123 PCIe SATA 6.0 Gb/s controller with 2 - 4tb drives plugged in. They are detected & listed in Bios. When I used Linuxmint the hdds were detected no problem. When i do the lshw command it lists the controller. It just doesn't list the hdds that are connected via ahci mode passthrough. What is needed by me to get the hardware working properly with MX Linux? I want to be able to access all the data on those drives.

i

maybe this is related to size of drives being 4 tb capacity? i have them partitioned with a couple of smaller partitions. Didnt have an issue with linux mint seeing drives so not sure what is different and/ or missing in mxlinux to do the same.

They might take a while to slog through, but do you see anything about the drives in the output of dmesg or the boot logs?

I also see a post about a similar problem on Ubuntu...maybe the fix in the last post, or a different kernel, would get it working.

I think this is due to 2 tb cap I logged into win 10 side since hdd were formatted in ntfs & see I have partitions with more than 2 tb. I will see if I can reconfigure them to be under the cap & see if that solves the problem.
I also noticed that the gdisk version you have could be updated from 1.01 to 1.04 but isn't available in the repositories. http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/index.html Other options maybe ahci drivers?

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/e ... Q/218575en is another site I looked at. I want to get this sorted out so I can move on to encryption scenarios, once I get installation & configuration sorted out.

I am using the affected hdds for data storage only ( mostly media files). Not booting from them at this point. I use my pc as a media server among other things. I like Sagetv so hoping to get that working under MX Linux. Currently running it off win 10 but want to convert over to linux exclusively if possible.

i did a dmesg & found a couple of entries mentioning said drives

1.658453] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA ST4000VN000-1H41 SC46 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

1.659593] scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA ST4000VN008-2DR1 SC60 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

Just not sure what I need to do to be able to mount them? Is that where the size ceiling comes into play?

I resized partitions so they are all > 2 TB. That didnt fix my issue with mounting the 2 -4 TB drives in linux that are attached to Marvel 88SE9123 6.0 GB sata Controller. I made a copy of dmesg output. I color highlighted what I thought were NB entries related to issue. Any help Would be appreciated in resolving my problem. I couldnt find an assigned uuid for the 2 affected drives so I could add them to fstab. Not sure what is next.
