SOLVED-Another MSI Laptop problem - shutdown/reboot failure

#1 Post by gonzo01 » Thu Jul 12, 2018 10:59 pm

Further to my earlier post re my MSI laptop I now have another problem

from mx 17.1 x64 it wont shutdown or reboot

shutdown hangs at {OK} Stopping SMB/CIFS daemon: smbd

and
Reboot hangs at {OK} Stopping Light Display Manager: lightdm

I've tried manually stopping SMB in a terminal and then running sudo shutdown - now but nothing changes.

Googling has provided no satisfactory solution

Advice please

NB: I suggest that Linux users stay away from MSI Gaming laptops.

Systeminformation e.g. via

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
is always a good starter. ;)

Hmmm....well, that shows some things that could be updated. With Kaby Lake hardware like yours, I would update to the latest kernel from our test repo, or at least one from stretch-backports.

Your Intel GPU is also not fully working, as shown by this:

Code: Select all

Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.2 ) drivers: vesa (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev)
Resolution: 1920x1080@0.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9, 256 bits)
version: 3.3 Mesa 13.0.6 Direct Render: Yes
So it's using the vesa driver with gallium, when the default should be modesetting, and you probably want the "intel" driver if you get scrolling glitches in Firefox (see MX Tweak). One that is fully working resembles this:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel driver: i915 v: kernel
Card-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile] driver: N/A
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 18.1.3
So it might also require a newer Mesa to get working correctly. There's a newer Mesa in our Experimental repo, or in stretch-backports.

Shutdown issues are related to ACPI, and maybe the newer kernel has a quirk for that. However, there are also BIOS updates available for your machine that also directly affect ACPI : https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GF62-7RD

Code: Select all

BIOS
Version
E16J9IMS.324
Release Date
2018-05-29
File Size
5.22 MB
and if it's anything like the MSI I'm using, you update the BIOS from a USB drive in the UEFI setup screen, so no Windows required. The zip also has a PDF with installation directions.

Steveo

thanks for your detailed reply.

I'll give it all a try.

Hopefully the BIOS update will work ok and not brick my laptop ( happened when I tried to update the BIOS of a PCDuino). Given that the upate is directly through tha laptop BIOS I cant forsee any difficulties. The .pdf included with the BIOS zip file is comprehensive.

I'll post again after trying it all.

Thanks again.

Simple solution - no need to update BIOS etc

Reformatted SSD and HDD

Clean install of MX 17.1

I can now Logout, Reboot and Shutdown without problems.

Crossing my fingers that all stays Fine.

Here are NEW results of:-

Yes, you have the modesetting driver working now for the Intel GPU. Are you getting any scrolling glitches in Firefox? If so, you could try switching to the "intel" driver with MX tweak.

You might eventually also want to see if the MX Nvidia driver installer gets Bumblebee working for you, so that you can use the Nvidia card for 3D rendering. Google Earth Pro is still broken for recent Intel GPUs, but works if you use Bumblebee with it, for example.
