WLAN (WIFI) works under MX-16.1, MX-17 does not

#1 Post by waldmattis » Sun Jun 10, 2018 4:55 am

Good morning
I have problems with the WLAN.
When I use MX-16.1, both my laptop's built-in interface and USB wireless devices are displayed.
I can access the Internet via WLAN without any problems.

But if I use MX-17, I get the message that the WLAN hardware holder of my laptop is switched off.
A WLAN connection is not possible.

How can it be that MX-16.1 ignores the switch position, but MX-17 does not?

Is there a possibility that MX-17 also ignores the switch?

Any help is welcome.
Thank you very much.
regards
Charles

Ps
Windows 7 also denies WLAN with the note that the hardware switch is switched off.

Check if the button under "Wifi status" in MX Network Assistant works for you.

is there a bios switch for the wife? eeepc's had them at one time, and when you switched off the wireless, you actually changed a bios setting. even with the keyboard combination to turn off/on wifi, especially in windows.

that is something to look for, especially if windows 7 is reporting the hardware switch off as well as MX17. If you've tried mx16 (after the switch is reported off) and it works, I'm honestly at a loss to explain that.

I know for myself, if I don't enable my wifi in the live environment, It doesn't show up whether I create it or not. New install?

I have problems with the WLAN.
...
Would you let us know a bit about you hardware you are using avoiding us poking in the fog.
In additon it's always good practice to post output from "Quick System Info" for system and hardware related questions (or use inxi -Fx from command line).

@dolphin_oracle
Yes, you are right.
On the original keyboard is (better: was) a key combination to Switch WLAN on or off.
Regrettably this keyboard is broken and now I use a wireless keyboard without this function.

The BIOS shows two choice for WLAN:

- Start with last status
- Switch WLAN off

So there is no option in BIOS to activate WLAN.

What surprises me is that MX-16.1 does not have to take care of the alleged hardware switch.
But MX-17 takes the switch into account.

It is an 9-year-old Medion laptop with Intel board.
No secure boot or the like.

Karl

Please do show us the output of this command from the command line:

Code: Select all

inxi -FNzx
Put the output within

tags
by pressing the code-tag icon above the editor-window </>
and paste between the code tags
paste the output here
.

the only thing different that mx16 does that mx17 doens't do is restart the network-manager service after log in.

so I guess you could try that.

Code: Select all

sudo service network-manager restart
but IMO its a long shot.
