Brother MFC-J485DW printer drivers needed

#1 Post by JBoman » Mon Apr 16, 2018 3:49 pm

This wireless multi function Brother printer configures fine in Debian 8 and 9 however is not in MX-17. Not showing a driver in the database and not finding one in search from the printer config app in MX. Didnt see a way to update the drivers database in the config app. Thanks

From the support page you can get driver for your MFC-J485DW and most other brother devices:

http://support.brother.com/g/b/productt ... 85dw_us_as

You need just download and run the
latest "Driver Install Tool" linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
available here :
http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... _as&os=128

To install just run the extracted installer like this
# sudo ./linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1 "MFC-J485DW"

Or alternatively have a look in my little installer script,
which includes checksum-verification .

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

# get_run_installer_Brother_MFC-J485DW.sh by FEHLIX
# to install Brother MFC-J485DW
# http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf006893/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
set -x
chksum=sha256sum
CHKSUM="b906c60933005b7e6485d845f8f6953d42175b90521cf6a6a5a4ce3708ee626e"

BROTHER="MFC-J485DW"
BRINS="linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1"
BRIGZ=$BRINS.gz
BRURL="http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf006893/$BRIGZ"
CHK=$BRIGZ.sha256
[ -f "$BRINS" -o -f $BRIGZ    ] || wget $BRURL
[ -f $BRIGZ  -a -f $CHK ] && rm -f $CHK
echo "$CHKSUM  $BRIGZ" > $CHK
$chksum -c $CHK || { echo "CHKSUM Error: abborting installation" && exit 1; }

[ -f $BRIGZ  -a ! -f $BRINS ] && gunzip -kv $BRIGZ
[ -f $BRINS ] && chmod +rx $BRINS && sudo -k && sudo ./$BRINS "$BROTHER"
exit $?
Happy printing!

Hey thank you to everyone for the links and how-to; guess I was being brain dead and lazy at the same time because I never even looked before posting. Thanks again printer is fine now. :popcorn:
