Is NTFS-3g pre-installed on MX-17?

#1 Post by larryw31 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 10:05 pm

MX-17_January installed. I plugged in my external NTFS drive and it worked R & W And I copied plenty gigs. But I later had a crash while doing dir/file move which resulted in LOSING an entire 10gigs off both the source and the destination. There was NO INDICATION anything abnormal had occurred, except a brief flicker of an error when I dismounted the drive an hour later.

Now that sounds like a bad driver, right? So I found a couple different sites to determine if NTFS-3g was installed and I got zero return implying NOT INSTALLED. I'm not so good at terminal, so Is that correct?

I recently had a similar situation in lubuntu where I had NTFS-3g installed and I formatted a new drive, but it turned out the disks program was broken to start with and I ended up losing data being moved also. The way to fix that was to build-dep on (I did it all) parted, disks, and NTFS-3g.

Do you know about the really useful command:

Code: Select all

apt policy
When I run that on 17.1, it is not even in the repos. My next step is always to do a web search on
debian NTFS-3g
That lets me see that the name is not capitalized, so the correct form is this:

Code: Select all

$ apt policy ntfs-3g
ntfs-3g:
  Installed: 1:2016.2.22AR.1+dfsg-1
  Candidate: 1:2016.2.22AR.1+dfsg-1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2016.2.22AR.1+dfsg-1 500
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

ntfs-3g is installed by default in MX-17. It's the only way to write to ntfs formatted disks from linux. The ntfs driver can only read from an ntfs volume, not write to one. And because of Microsoft's refusal to properly document ntfs, the ntfsfix program is somewhat limited compared to chkdsk in Windows for repairing ntfs problems.
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

Hi Jerry3904, thanks for your reply. The caps of ntfs in this current message were done from memory(force of habit: NTFS), I actually copied the websites directly when troubleshooting. Unfortunately those are gone from terminal's memory. And I guess they didn't work, were from older ubuntu, all I could find.

apt policy ntfs-3g is good, thanks for that. So it is installed in mine.

well, I've been using crazy lubuntu which crashes all the time if you sneeze during file move, but I never lost a single byte, and certainly not the source, without the destination being verified. So why would the source be deleted if there was ANY issue with the destination?

Oh I've had this happen a long time ago, especially on larger files. NOT FUN!! I have learned to copy the file instead and delete the original when I am done, became my personal workaround so to speak ;)
