Black screen after installing Nvidia

#1 Post by Biofobico » Fri Jan 19, 2018 2:21 pm

After I installed nvidia 375.82-9mx17+1 using MxTools and rebooting I got a black screen with the following error:

Code: Select all

Using the MxTools quick system info, here are the details of my laptop:

After some searching here in the forums I was able to revert to nouveau using

Code: Select all

ddm-mx -p nvidia
and get my desktop back.
I'm somewhat new to Linux, so excuse me if this issue its very basic and easily fixed.

Ok, your system is not installing the optimus drivers and its failing our detection test (been a while since we've seen a failure).

So here's what I recommend.

1. install nvidia drivers with the installer tool again, but do not reboot.

2. after install of nvidia drivers is done, then from terminal

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -i fixbumblebee
which should purge out xorg.conf and a couple of other uneeded items.

3. from terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia primus primus-libs-ia32:i386
which as long as you don't remove the nvidia-driver stuff you've already installed, should get you bumblebee installed.

4. from terminal

Code: Select all

sudo groupadd bumblebee
sudo groupadd video
sudo usermod -a -G bumblebee,video $USER
where $USER is your user name.

5. hold your breath and reboot.

So I opened synaptic and was presented with and error(can't remember what it said) but there was a message to run

Code: Select all

dpkg --configure -a
so solve the issue. I did it and rebooted just in case.
Fired up MxTools to follow your instructions and it shows this:

Code: Select all

It seems that the drivers are installed but not in use? Should I proceed and do what you wrote in your post or another course of action its nedeed?

I'm confused. the purge command you ran earlier should have removed the nvidia-drivers.

if they are installed, as seems to be indicated, then start from step 2.

Probably the

Code: Select all

dpkg --configure -a
had something to do with it?

I follow along from step 2 and rebooted to the desktop and now I got this:

Code: Select all

Can I assume everything its ok now?
Thanks for all the help (and patience).

looks right to me. now if you start an app with the optirun command, any OpenGL rendering will be done by the nvidia part instead of the intel.
