Thanks to all for the helpful shopping tips.... Yes, I'll need a HDD with PATA (ribbon) connector.

In terms of links to websites - I should say that I'm over on the other side of the pond, so I'm having to source a replacement from a UK parts-supplier. In fact I have found several options and have ordered a refurb'ed Western Digital 160GB drive (comes with a 1-year warranty...) for the equivalent of about $15. Good enough to experiment/play with!

Edit: didn't see your post on p2 of the thread.

With 154 bad sectors, the drive is essentially gone. You might be able to delete all partitions, then do the long test. I not 100% sure GSC reassigns sectors; I think so. But SeaTools can if the drive is attached to the machine via USB adapter. If you can reclaim some sectors you might be alright for a while, possibly by partitioning around the worst sections of the drive. The drive is on the way out though.
