Is there a way to upgrade the kernel on an installed to hard drive system?

SwampRabbit,

I only have a Rizen 5 1500x and both MX and AntiX 17-b1 & b2 work out of the box, but I have a low cost motherboard MSI. That is being reported as a Laptop see below...

I just installed AntiX 17-b2 last night...

@namida, thank you for sharing that. The correct audio driver is loading for you in comparison to mine.
The audio device is doing the same thing as the GPU, it is identified as "Device aae0"and loads the snd_hda_intel driver.
When I go to MX Select Sound under 'MX Tools', it give me the options:
"HDMI: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI" and "Generic: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic"

Something is up with it, don't have time to play with it just yet, but I'll look at your Ryzen thread again soon.

I had read that the 4.11 kernel had support for that audio chip.

I didn't have sound in VLC or system sounds at all, I'm sure it is something easy to fix, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Or is the USB live route?

I typically always do the live kernel update through the live USB route now if I am playing with a new system that needs a newer kernel or I want it "baked in" to the live USB when I prepare them for certain systems.
I gave a quick rundown of the steps I use on post #5, the wiki gives really good info too.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for the power supply. I hope the build goes well, really want to know how that faster RAM works out for you. I am still using the stock BIOS 0610, you might need to upgrade to get the most out of the 3200 RAM. I haven't set the XMP profile yet, so the RAM isn't running as fast as its supposed to be. But I wanted to get everything up and semi-good before I messed with anything else.

Now posting from the live DVD of MX 16. (an old beta laying on top of the pile) 4.7 kernel

So far this is easier than expected, all my hardware worked OTB except sound. The cheap NVidia card is supported OTB. eth0 automatically works.
Really this is a test of the support in the kernel for these new Ryzen motherboards. So, the sound is the sticking point. It may be the HDMI conflict, or needs the driver from 4.11 kernel. (worst case I buy a supported sound card.)

I was using the antiX 17 beta with also good results. (4.10 kernel)
With that boots, I enable eth0 with ceni, then can connect with firefox. Youtube plays with no sound.

The sound may be some hdmi thing, both sound chips are listed, the AND Device 1457 and also the NVidia which is hdmi sound. I have seen conflicts before, sometimes it is necessary to kill the hdmi one, and tell the system the on board one is the main sound card.

I partitioned my Samsung nvme SSD with gparted from the live DVD, so I can try installs. It appears in the MX disk manager. I can't wait to see the speed !

I ran 22 minutes of MEMTEST 86, no errors, it thinks the RAM is 2400 MHz, though the BIOS says I have 3200 MHZ. I will let that run over night.
Still deciding if I should immediately update the BIOS to 0805 - still on the 0610 it came with.

Temperature monitoring is not working. (there is some in the BIOS -but not in linux)

Wow, this is getting better and better...

Go to MX Menu ----> System---->MX Select Sound ---->Select another sound card -->Pull down menu to Generic HDAIntel-HD Audio Generic

Now the sound works !

Wow a good way to end the night.

Wow, MX linux is truly wonderful !

I was so worried that a kernel transplant would be needed to get this Ryzen board going.
But here I sit in MX-16.1, fully updated, with everything working so far on cutting edge hardware.

Last night I ran MEMTEST, 3 hours 5 minutes, no errors.
I couldn't install MX-16 last night as the nvme drive was not recognized. I searched the forum and saw there was an installer fix, and someone suggested to try the most recent monthly snapshot.

So under my installed antix17 beta2, I downloaded the July snapshot, md5 was good, burn verified, so I installed .
Correct, the July snapshot sees the nvme drive, and installed as normal.

etho is automatically configured.
I switched to the generic sound card with MX menu ->System ->MS Select sound > select the Generic HDA Intel.
Now sound works on music AND youtube. (Under antiX 17 beta2, sound for music on disk worked, but youtube played, but without sound)
Samba connects to the windows shares with no additional configuration.
top shows 12 cores, that is from the two threads per core. (a big step up from the old Fx-8320)

I did 91 syanaptic updates, installed a bunch of additional programs, rebooted, all looks good !
Amazing !

There could still be subtle things in the sound that are not supported by the generic, as I have not tested extensively,

SwampRabit,

The RAM speed was easy. On the first BIOS screen -still in the EZ mode, I just enabled the D.O.C.P, it detects the RAM speed and sets it all up. (still on the 0610 BIOS since things seem to be working, there is less urgency to update to the 0806)

MEMTEST still thinks it is 2400 MHz, but all screens in the BISO indicate is is at 3200 MHz. I will find some other way to check the speed independent of MEMTEST and BIOS.

Edit: Hmmm, just had a first lock-up, while editing this post, keyboard and mouse totally unresponsive...had to hit the reset button??!??!?!
Maybe a BIOS update is indicated. When I set up my old signature system with FX-8320, I had stability problems, and a BIOS update was one of the fixes.

OK, based on my earlier signature system's (FX-8320) stability fix a few years ago , I updated to BIOS 0805, with the USB method, and bumped the DRAM voltage from 1.35 to 1.37V to make sure I am not marginal on voltage. Rebooted no problems, in BIOS re-enabled D.O.C.P., back to 3200 MHz. Seems OK for now.

Time for stability testing now....
