USB port not working

#1 Post by birchy » Fri Aug 10, 2018 9:39 am

Hi all,
Have just installed MX on an old Presario 2500 laptop. All seems to be working as expected, however one of the USB ports doesn't seem to be recognised. FYI, there are 3 USB ports: 2 on the back (which are working OK) and one in the side (which is not recognised). Both "lsusb" and "dmesg" fail to recognise a plug-in event of a 32gb pen drive. The pen drive is recognised when plugged into any of the other 2 ports.

The USB port itself is working OK when I boot the Windows XP partition, so I'm assuming there's a driver issue?

Any advice please?

Scratch that. USB port is now working after a reboot.

Good. I think all of us were kind of scratching our heads on that one...

I have found that after installing system updates, Thunar often cannot detect devices plugged into USB ports. This happens in Manjaro XFCE as well.

A reboot always sorts it out.

Not sure if that is the cause of your problem.

Many laptops (and some desktops) only have USB drivers in the BIOS for one set of ports. They rely on OS drivers for the others, and so wouldn't have been detected until on OS was installed.

A range of Dell laptops I use has this issue; you can only USB boot from one of the ports.
