MX-17.1: RTL8188CUS nano Wi-Fi USB stick doesn't work

#1 Post by MX-16_fan » Wed Aug 08, 2018 4:11 pm

I just helped a friend set up a MX-17.1 (from the June 2018 snapshot) system.

The system runs fine, but doesn't like his RTL8188CUS-based nano Wi-Fi USB stick.

I saw that this is supposed to work o.k., but it doesn't.

Tried various kernels, but to no avail.

Using the default kernel, he could see the WLAN access point, but couldn't connect to it (got some "time-out" message), plus the machine got stuck when shutting down (some NetworkManager problem).

lsusb says:
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter
iwconfig says:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry short limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Anyone got an idea what can be done about that?

Greetings, Joe

UPDATE:

My friend made a few more efforts to solve this, and made some interesting observations:

He uses a Wi-Fi router (first storey) and a Wi-Fi repeater (second storey). The repeater announces the WLAN using the same name as the router uses.

When he's on the second storey (repeater): no connection at all.

When he's on the first story (router): connection possible (using the "4.9.91-antix.1-amd64-smp (x86_64)" kernel), but extremely slow.

Is this due to a bug in the driver?

Greetings, Joe

UPDATE II:

Put the stick into another machine, used the same MX-17.1 boot medium as before. This time during some sessions it worked perfectly o.k., while during some sessions (after reboot) it didn't work at all.

I had originally thought that the stick might not get enough power - it was in an ExpressCard-to-USB-3.0 adapter which had to power a nano Bluetooth USB stick, too.

However, in the second machine it was in a genuine USB slot, so this can't be the cause of all the trouble.

I noticed that the stick gets extremely warm. Don't know if this is typical for nano Wi-Fi sticks.

Greetings, Joe
