Mounting 8tb HDD requires root pwd?

#1 Postby jbloggs » Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:34 pm

I'm running MX -16 x64 (XFCE) from a 16 gb Lexar Plug'n'Stay usb thumb drive.

I have an 8tb HDD which is in a hot-swap bay.

When I connect this drive MX requires the root password. Permissions are correct ( same user-name etc as thumb drive)

Have MX on my laptop and my main PC ( HDD installs) and have had it on the PC in question on an old HDD. All work fine - no need for root password to access other drives.

Suggestions?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can get rid of the password by adding the drive in disk-manager.

some more info would be good.

how is the thumb drive formated?

how is the HDD formated?

can the "installed" MX utilize the drive in the hot swap bay without the root password? If so, is this drive defined in fstab and if so, please post the contents of the fstab.

Its quite possible that the thumb drive, which udev will determine is removable, is mountable as a user but that HDD is showing up as an "internal" non-removable drive, which by default requires root access, or at least some setup for user access, depending on how the drive is formatted.
