Hey guys - thought I'd post here to avoid making a new thread about the same thing: After the most recent update, I noticed that gufw was completely missing (the shortcut/launcher to it on my side panel couldn't find the program, which was a bit puzzling). I found this thread a couple minutes later, and ended up using sudo aptitude install gufw - I don't have a screenshot or text paste of it at the moment, but the first solution offered didn't do anything, so I hit 'n' for the next one, which downgraded I think 4-ish packages, and successfully reinstalled it. (I'm a total linux newbie as of right now, so a lot of what I'm saying might be vague and unhelpful, haha).

Immediately afterwards, the MX updater lit up, and this time I remembered to at least copy the text:

Code: Select all

  full upgrade
  Reading package lists...
  Building dependency tree...
  Reading state information...
  Calculating upgrade...
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
     gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0 (2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
     gir1.2-soup-2.4 (2.56.0-2+deb9u2)
     libenchant1c2a (1.6.0-11+b1)
     libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 (2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
     ufw (0.35-4)
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
     gir1.2-webkit2-4.0 (2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
     gufw (17.04.1-1.1)
     libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37 (2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
The following packages will be upgraded:
     gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0 (2.18.6-1~deb9u1 => 2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
     libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 (2.18.6-1~deb9u1 => 2.24.3-1~mx17+1)
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 3 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 4,936 kB of archives.
After this operation, 46.4 MB disk space will be freed.
it seems like it wants to remove gufw completely via the update process, which is what I'm assuming happened last time I updated (without paying enough attention, as it were :/) and which I ended up having to downgrade a couple things for afterwards in order to reinstall it.

I'm wondering if there's an easy solution to this - again I'm pretty clueless when it come to linux in general, so any help would be appreciated. :)
Mod note: Please make a thread for your personal issue with this, otherwise the overview gets lost.

Same problem, different computers, could be a different cause. Thanks.

For the OP, didn't Stevo also observe that his brave browser repo was not only for an Ubuntu version, but one that wasn't as close to Debian stretch as it could be? But I don't know anything about brave browser and which version works best with mx17/18 so I hesitate to give definitive advice here.

My thought is that the brave repo could be conflicting repo #3, after backports and deb-multimedia.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

As I mentioned in viewtopic.php?f=104&t=51958#p519733 I followed the instructions at Brave's website for installing in Debian 9, on which MX is currently based, I believe. It would not be wise to just go and install something different than instructed by the app developers, even if it worked now there is a chance that in the future some change could mess up the entire operating system.

An operating system needs apps to be useful and, logically, the MX repo does not have every app that exists for Linux in it, that would be an utopia. In Debian and Debian derivatives many apps use repos to install and update the applications, but if that brings troubles to the MX operating system, I believe it to be a problem of considerable relevance.
But I know close to nothing about this, these are only my thoughts as an user uneducated on the subject.

About this viewtopic.php?f=104&t=51958&sid=c5b65a9 ... 10#p520209 if someone could please give me some assistance on choosing the correct thing to do, I'd really appreciate it.

Yes, your second solution removes the bogus deb-multimedia "dmo" updates that are at the root cause of your problem, restores your system to a standard MX state, and installs gufw. Go for it!

When that fixes the issue, please edit the title of your first post in the thread to add [SOLVED]. Thanks!

Yes that did it, I was able to install gufw firewall and all seems to be fixed!

Thank you all very much for all the help, I'm marking this one as solved.
