new MX linux 18 user vs youtube download

Post by Opale7000 » Wed May 22, 2019 6:19 pm

Hello MX Linux fans.

Coming from Mint, i was using youtube-dl or ClipGrab(Gui) to download and convert to local disk. Is there something similar in MX? :crossfingers:

Yes.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install clipgrab youtube-dl-gui
or you can launch synaptic & install 'em

Yes, those are available in the standard and test repositories. Some other applications can also download embedded videos, such as youtube-dl-gui, smtube with uget, and qmplay2.

not wanting to hijack this post, but recently I've had no luck downloading youtube videos with either clipgrab or YouTube-DL GUI.

Here's the error msg I rec'd today (clipgrab). I think I get the same msg when I tried with YouTube-DL GUI.

I was able to get what I wanted with youtube-dl from the command line, but don't understand why the others aren't working for me...

Thanks.

The Firefox add-on, Video Downloadhelper, has always worked for me although once in a while it won't see a file. Sometimes it asks to dl a companion app it uses for certain circumstances. For Windows users the companion app costs money, but it's free for Linux users. The addon couldn't see a concert I was trying to dl, .../watch?v=YG9VFfaKJ7M, but when I tried Youtube-DLG I saw that the file was 3.7Gb, so I think the addon has a file size restriction.
True freedom is never asking the question; Am I free?

Perhaps used version are outdated:
Check youtube-dl version with:

Code: Select all

youtube-dl --version
gives me today:
youtube-dl --version
2019.06.21

YT-DLG uses it's own version of youtube-dl.
Check vesion with:

Code: Select all

python ~/.config/youtube-dlg/youtube-dl --version
E.g. YT-DLG internal version seems to be fairly outdated:
python ~/.config/youtube-dlg/youtube-dl --version
2019.04.01

Trying to download gives an error.
After manual update with YT-DLG -> Cogwheel -> Update

Code: Select all

$ python ~/.config/youtube-dlg/youtube-dl  --version
2019.07.02
Wow, even newer then the installed one from youtube-dl, and download works now without issues.
Clipgrab - IDK, probably similar issues with ongoing changes on the yt-web-site.

There's a newer clipgrab in the test repo that has an issue with manual URL entry, but it might have the same problem. You can use their Appimage to work around that text issue, though.

I just built the newer Clipgrab 3.8.3 release, and the text entry problem seems to be gone. Here's the packages if you want them early, and ignore the MX 19 packages unless you have a Buster-based release.
