Updates for packets from Backport

#1

Post by Herve33 » Fri Mar 15, 2019 10:58 am

Hello,
I do not know if you noticed, but the update of the packets in backports are not done automatically during the updates. For example the latest version of libreoffice does not install automatically, it must be done manually.
Is this a will of MX linux? If yes, why ?
Thanks

its the will of debian. debian sets a lower priority on backports repos by default, so that they are not preferred over the stable repos.

also, we don't keep the backports repos activated by default. it is turned on as needed by MX-Package Installer.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Yes, but libreoffice only has the backports version on MXlinux, so it will not update?

correct. we host our own version of libreoffice and it will not update unless we update ours in our repo.

@Herve: if you want to be on the cutting edge, install directly from the LibreOffice website. There are directions in the Wiki:

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/applications/libreoffice/
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB
Personal: XPS 13, 4.18.0-19.3-liquorix, 4 GB

No, I do not necessarily want the latest version, but I want to be sure that the version is secure with the latest security patches. If it's not the last, it's ok.

I'm mainly looking for security, I do not care to have the latest packages.

We currently have a slightly newer Libreoffice 6.1.5 in the MX test repo, but I was only able to backport that by copying the changes necessary from the slightly older rc version in backports. And not enough users have given us feedback to move 6.1.5 to main.
