On what partition is "/isoboot/tails.iso" better put it on a ext4 partition?
It is in my home, yes ext4, maybe I should relocate it to root?

Code: Select all

mx@mx:~
$ ls -l /isoboot
ls: cannot access '/isoboot': No such file or directory
mx@mx:~
$ ls -l /home/mx/isoboot
total 1204880
-rw-r--r-- 1 mx mx 1233793024 Mar 14 20:07 tails.iso
Yeah, that pgp stuff is confusing, will try to figure it out. I like checksums much better, even if less reliable. But they are not posting them any more.

Wait, maybe I know what I messed up. Since 'regular' download from Tails gets you *.img file, I choose to DL the 'other' one, the one that is *.iso file, but now I see it says that it is for virtual machine. I didn't paid attention to this last time, i was just focusing to get 'iso' file instead of 'img' file. Maybe that is the problem.

Question: can I use your recipe, your custom.cfg but with *.img file instead of iso file? (of course with custom.cfg modified to point to proper file)

I'm downloading now img file.

The isofile in custom.cfg is a full file-path including filename
on a ext4 partition. If home is not a separate partition,
grub cannot find if specified with a invalid, different file-path.

The *.img file is a USB-img, It might work or not, I havn't tested. I've downloaded the ISO, gpg-verified and run from grub with ISO-boot menu entry.

Well, then I think I downloaded the same iso file as you: https://tails.boum.org/install/vm-downl ... ex.en.html
Yes, home is separate partition and just to be on a safe side I tried both ways anyway:

Code: Select all

set isofile=/home/mx/ISO/Tails/tails-amd64-3.12.1.iso
and

Code: Select all

set isofile=/ISO/Tails/tails-amd64-3.12.1.iso
I will try with 'img' file once also, since where is 'iso' download on Tails web page, there is not available: tails-amd64-3.12.1.iso.sig to verify 'iso' the download. I did import their signing key successfully, though. I will also download again 'iso' file and verify it with Tails browser extension.

Then I will try with both, 'img' and 'iso' files again. If both ways fails, I will not worry about this any more, as long as OP can get it booted, I was just second opinion tester anyway

And thank you for all your time!

Well, think twice. If /home is a separate partition,
The file-path on that partition according to the above example shall be:

Code: Select all

set isofile=/mx/ISO/Tails/tails-amd64-3.12.1.iso
The home partition will be "mounted" into/on the existing (yet empty) "/home" directory within "/"-root partition.
through the entries within /etc/fstab.
So after you booted the home-partition is visible for you as /home/mx .....
Hence they call /home-directory a mount-point.
But on the home-partition itself the path is just /mx....
And grub does not know about your mount points. It just sees the partition as they are ...
:puppy:
I know.. live is confusing ... sometimes

Thank you for the help. I am going to drive 40 miles to download MX 18 today and R/R when I get back.
Then see if I can get it to boot from ISO and do other things.

This one MX 17.1 seems to have some problems at the moment.

Hoping 18 will solve those for me :-)
Mx 17.1, dual boot with XP Media Center Edition 2005, core i5, 4gb ram, 2TB hybrid Seagate + other storage drives.

I NEED MULTISYSTEM just like the one I can get for *buntu derivatives. NOT THE ISO ONE.

That's just pure nitpicking now...
