[SOLVED] Boot to shell option

#1

Post by alexjack » Mon Jan 07, 2019 6:49 pm

Hi all, I've started running a Minecraft server on a system that just about meets the required spec. It's a Core2 duo with 2 rams and MX18. It's recommended that the server is run just from a shell, with no gui loaded. I know that I can press Ctl-Alt-F1, and but I think that leaves much running in the background. Could be wrong though. Essentially, I am looking to boot the machine into a state with the lowest possible memory and cpu overhead. Would having a boot option that stops before XFCE loading be the way, and if so, how?

Next to where it says "splash".

Nothing happens pressing Esc at the login menu, and I can't see "splash" either. So I guess I'm in the wrong place. Any further pointers?

Cheers

he meant the grub boot menu, not the log in menu.

Hit "e" to edit a boot menu entry, then add the "3" to the end of the line that includes the other boot codes like "quiet" and "splash".

Sorry, my mistake. I meant at the boot/grub menu.

Is this the correct line:

linux /boot/vmlinuz.......lots of stuff...........BOOT_IMAGE=antiX/vmlinuz quiet

It's the only one I can see with one of the options quoted above.

Add " 3" to this line? Or "3" with no space?

Yes add 3 there. Make sure there is a space after quiet.

If already in a desktop session, can also switch to runlevel 3 by issuing command "sudo telinit 3" or "sudo init 3", right?
