Schrodinger's VPN - How do I remove this VPN?

#1 Post by dfp5 » Mon Nov 05, 2018 4:35 am

I have a subscription to ExpressVPN. I have used it on Windows, Mac and just last week, Mint on my ThinkPad, without any hitches. However, I've recently installed it on my new MX system, and it's proving to be a formidable foe.

I downloaded the .deb from the site. I double clicked it, which automatically brings up the GDebi Installer, to which I then installed it, exactly the same process as I did on Mint.

But here's where the problem arises: whenever I try to connect or activate the program through the terminal, I get:

Code: Select all

$ expressvpn activate
Cannot connect to expressvpnd daemon.

It seems the expressvpn daemon is not running. Please run "sudo service expressvpn restart" to start it.

If the problem persists, please contact us.

and if I run the sudo service, I get:

Code: Select all

$ sudo service expressvpn restart
expressvpn: unrecognized service

and the worst part is, and where I'm hoping someone can help, I can't uninstall the damn thing! It's still there in the Synaptic Package Manager, and every time I try to uninstall it:

Code: Select all

$ sudo dpkg -r expressvpn
(Reading database ... 314679 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing expressvpn (1.5.1) ...
Cannot connect to expressvpnd daemon.

It seems the expressvpn daemon is not running. Please run "sudo service expressvpn restart" to start it.

At this point, it's just a 40mb blob on my system and I want it gone. Is there anything that can be done? 2 hours of contacting the expressvpn support yielded nothing. They just keep telling me to repeat the same old suggestions in their installation guide. Here it is, if needed:

https://www.expressvpn.com/support/vpn- ... for-linux/

[edit] Here's a screencap clearly showing the problem:

And here's a screencap showing it's very much installed:

If express vpn client is systemd depended then you have to follow this thread viewtopic.php?f=94&t=46456&hilit=mullvad
But change the line in the rc.local according to your vpn.

Could you specifically point out what I should be doing? That thread has 4 pages and there's still a lot of GNU/Linux terminology I don't understand.

Go to /etc/rc.local, open it and add this line: /opt/expressvpn\ VPN/resources/expressvpn-daemon -v --disable-stdout-timestamps, before the end in the text. After that reboot and see if it is running.

Have I done anything wrong? I definitely saved the rc.local, then restarted. I still get the same results as seen on the left.

Leave a line empty before exit. If is not working you must find the path of expressvpn.

Still same messages when starting the VPN.

I'm not sure how to find the path for expressVPN, but I can give you this:

$ sudo apt list expressvpn

expressvpn/now 1.5.1 amd64 [installed,local]

Terminal based, that's how I used it in Mint. You also have the option of using the browser extension instead.

I see, so it's a different kind of problem. Maybe someone else have a clue how to fix this issue. :frown:
