Swapping issue

#1 Post by bushyiii » Mon Oct 29, 2018 2:07 pm

So I have a old weak laptop: IBM Thinkpad T43 with 1.5g of Ram and 2g of swap space on MX-17.1_386.
I only use it for email and light surfing. Here's my issue. I will reboot, open Firefox and go to Gmail, it then works acceptably. I will not power down for a day and the next day I have excessive memory swaps to disk. I'm guessing there's a big memory leak somewhere, may be Firefox or something within MX.

Is there any way to pinpoint the issue and any action to minimize it?

You could try changing the swappiness from 60 to 10. https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/linux-swappiness/

I presume the RAM is 1GB in one slot, and 512MB in the other?

Any chance you could ditch the 512MB for a second 1GB stick? 2GB will make a big difference.

+1 for the swappiness change; I run all my machines with spinning drives with the swappiness at 10, and those with SSD's I set it to 1.

Test machines:
32-bit non-PAE - Thinkpad T41, 1.6GHz Pentium M, 1GB RAM.
32-bit PAE - DELL Latitude D610, 1.73GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM.
64-bit - Lenovo T61, 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM
64-bit - Gigabyte Z77P-D3, Intel i3-3220, GeForce 8400 GS, 4GB PC3-12800.

I have a 1 gig ram stick on order, I expect it will help.

Sorry but I don't understand your request. What are the brackets you speak of? I deleted the output of lshw from my original post but can add it back once I understand about the brackets.

nomko meant, you shall edit you post with this long non-good readable output
and wrap it between code-tags

.
By this you post is better readable. And perhaps you would get more response to you questions ;)

You can do this: Edit your post, mark the whole long text-output with the mouse and
click the code-tag icon </> above the editor window.
