Solved: Different display same conky

#1 Post by duane » Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:27 pm

First let me say that is not something that the devs need to run down. I know it is getting that time of year when you are getting busier working on new versions.
I just noticed something that I can't figure out.
I wonder if anybody has an idea how this could be?
I started getting tired of the wallpaper and conky that I have been using on my several computers. (All Lenovo Thinkcentres several versions.)
So I went about downloading new wallpapers and changing conkys until I found the new look I wanted.

I am now running the second conky in the list the one that ends in Asq-clock-new.
Funny thing is one of my computers fails to display the MX version information in the conky.
It is a M92p small form factor and I have two of them that are identical as far as hardware.
This has got me bugged. It is not that important. I just can't figure it out.
I did cat /etc/issue in the terminal just to make sure the one was not updated from an RC but no they are both MX 17.1.

It could be the device names used in conky vary from those on your PCs. You'd need to check the conky code. I know you probably don't want to do that. Problems can easily occur with wireless names, ethernet names, disk drive names, etc.

Post pictures and code from your conky in question, the inxi output from MX Linux Tools and someone can probably tell you what's amiss...

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I am taking care of my wife who is down with an injured knee.
So that is taking quite a bit of my time.
So I am going to look at it more as I have time.
Thanks,
Duane

The only thing that stands out as different is the display cables. One being vga the other being display port to HMDI.
Looking as I have time.

Conky reads the data from the file
/etc/mx-version

So if the one Lenovo does not show this, then the file is missing or in the Conky in question the parameter is wrong.
On the picture you can see the relevant commands:

- Your command
- the command cat
- and the command Conky uses

For some reason I get a syntax error when trying to run the awk command you show and I am not sure what the problem is.
I can't see anything wrong with the files the conky is using.
I am going to print them both and see if I see anything in a side by side comparison.
Thanks duane

From a live usb the conky shows the system info as it should.
When doing a shut down from the hard drive the system info shows up in the conky for a brief time just before shutdown.

OK. I have discovered that it is the display settings for this monitor that are causing the problem.
If I change those the system info show in the conky but conversely when that shows up the display is the wrong size.
So it appears there is no fix that will work with this monitor.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I am going to mark this solved .

I don't think it's the monitor's display settings that are causing this problem.

this indicates that there is a conflict between the configuration of the Conky (these are all in mx17 in 1.9 version) and the installed Conky version in mx17, which gives 1.10

You can find out the installed Conky version with the command:

Code: Select all

conky -v

Check in Conky Manager that you do not have 2 conkies checked
