External HDD is 'locked'; Can only read files, despite having read and write permissions

#1 Post by moo » Sat Oct 06, 2018 2:32 pm

Hello MX Linux Forum,

I have been struggling for a while with a problem involving writing to a 1TB external hard drive.
I can only read files from the hard drive, and cannot delete the files, or edit them, even trying through the command line, using rm -f. The files in the hard drive all have a little padlock symbol next to them: http://i.imgur.com/KhuuxaY.png

I dual boot my computer with Windows 10, and can edit/delete files in the hard drive when in windows 10, so I think this means it probably isn't a hardware issue? (in case the hardware is relevant info, the HDD is mounted in the Thinkpad caddy, using this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AQOI7GE/ ... 41_TE_dp_1)

I have tried:
1) unmounting the harddrive, then mounting it again. This doesn't work.
2) Checking the permissions. It seems that I *should* be able to write to the hard drive. http://i.imgur.com/7TQhb7O.png
3) My friend recommended reinstalling the ntfs-3g package (since the drive is formatted using ntfs) through the synaptic package editor, and this did work, although only temporarily since the problem came back the next day.
4) Weirdly, I was able to find another temporary fix by shrinking the volume with gparted, then increasing it again. This fix, like #3, was only temporary :'(

Thanks so much for taking the time to try and help me,
Many thanks,
Alex

Do you have this device defined in your fstab?

It seems to me it.might be defaulting to using the older ntfs device driver rather than ntfs-3g.

Would using Disk Manager (->Settings) to mount the hard drive and changing the default ntfs driver to ntfs-3g make any difference?

This is likely due to windows 10 fast boot. You can either disable it permanently (from win10, naturally) or disable it just for once by hitting the <Shift> key while clicking the Shutdown button. See here.

Thanks for the response @dolphin_oracle!
The HDD I'm having troubles with is the /dev/sda1
My fstab file is:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

#Entry for /dev/sdb1 :
UUID=b5bf66b1-8a69-4330-92b7-fc17dd4f2414 / ext4 defaults 1 1
#Entry for /dev/sda1 :
UUID=27CEE1A432C0EE98 /media/alex/Media ntfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,uhelper=udisks2 0 0
#Entry for /dev/sdb2 :
UUID=6a6eb08a-811b-4f7a-b1aa-629c038d32e6 swap swap defaults 0 0

That's what I thought. Wrong ntfs driver. Use ntfs-3g in place of ntfs.

No I saw this post. I have posted a trick to repair read only nfts read only partition. Happens me frequently with my Windows 10. From my ARCH i see a read only partition (NTFS partition that I use as storage for Linux and Windows)

In your MX Linux install ntfs-3g as follow.

sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g.
Then run the ntfsfix command on your NTFS partition.

For example: (suppose that your read only partition is hda6)

ntfsfix /dev/hda6

Unmount and mount your hda6
as follow.

sudo umount /dev/hda6
sudo mount /dev/hda6

push F5 from your keyboard.Done

Simply put all command in a sh file and execute it every time that you see that your partition is read only.
