In Thunar, "Unmount" before "Eject" USB drives?

I'm not sure what procedure is here. Do I simply unmount a USB drive - which is what I've been doing - or do I unmount and then eject? Or can I simply eject?

I have another problem as well. I have a few usb drives that I sync with a couple of folders on disk. A typical job might be 500MB per usb stick. What should take maybe half a minute often hangs up, with no progress showing on the meter for 2 or 3 minutes. This happens on all the usb sticks, even on new ones, so I don't think they're the problem. And I did not have this problem, that I recall, when this machine ran Win7.

This happens with the native usb 2.0 ports, and also, I believe, with a usb 3.0 card I installed.

Eject will unmount first then remove from the system dev tree.

Unmount will just unmount the drive but not remove from the dev tree.

Either are safe for removal.

As to the copying...there is a lot of buffering so a copy operation can complete before the drive is actually written to fully. This is usually the fastest way but it can be confusing.

Windows actually also.does this but in my experience to a lesser degree.

In any case, thunar will not unmount until after the copy operation is complete.

Thanks D_O, that was very clearly explained.

Thank you, Dolphin. That was very clear. That's what I thought about unmounting/ejecting, but I wondered if I was doing something wrong and harming the usb sticks, after thinking about the hang problem.

I see, about the buffering. But isn't something out of wack when copy jobs are taking far longer than they "should"?

Maybe, just maybe, this is the same problem I ran into when copying large amounts of data between USB sticks. See this thread.

Actually, MX is in many respects faster and smoother than my Win7 install (on the same hardware ;) ) but this is one glaring exception. (Another is the time required to boot but I do this only once or twice a day so it's not such a problem.)

See this thread.
Thanks much. Some really good information there. I've installed nocache and will see what it does.

I also had one machine that had massive boot times - in the order of 10-15 minutes - with MX. It was an HP x2 Split, with detachable keyboard base. I suppose it was some weird hardware issue that was choking things. Other distros didn't have the problem, and I was forced to use Mint, which is not my favorite. The unit also had serious touchpad problems under all distros. Worked fine on Win10.

Good grief... it's not that bad

On my desktop booting into a Windows 7 command line (console) window takes ~10s, booting into a zsh terminal windows around double that (both w/ autologin).

Yes, for quite a while I thought it simply wasn't booting, and I kept trying. Then I just let the machine alone, and as I was typing a help request here, noticed that it had finally booted up. Several minutes had passed. Very strange.

It's actually worse with nocache. I've got a 4gb job that's been stalled at 7 seconds in for over a minute now. Going to uninstall.

Hm... too bad but still an interesting data point.

nocache does not finally resolve the issue for me but it helps significantly. Perhaps what you're observing is a different problem altogether.
