Install MX 17.1 with kernel 4.9 or lower [SOLVED]

#1

Post by rasat » Wed Oct 03, 2018 5:24 pm

I am reinstalling my system (MX 17.1) in another partition with same /home. Problem with Dell 5567, install CD doesn't boot with kernel 4.15 (MX 17.1). My current system use 4.9.
viewtopic.php?f=107&t=44502

I installed MX 16.1 (kernel 4.7) but cannot be upgraded to 17.1 due to Debian 8 to 9.

How to install MX 17.1 with 4.9 kernel or lower?

You could use USB with persistency on a computer that can run it, install 4.9 kernel update the kernel with live-kernel-updater and then install on the other system.

What Adrian said is pretty easy. I have a video on my channel (I think I use antix in the video but the tools and process are the same).

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-18.3
lenovo s21e - antiX-19 beta 2 (live-USB)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

The links were helpful.... made things easy.
Works well, except lot of USB text/info during the boot. Is there a way to clean up?

You could install MX-Plymouth and have it covered at boot with some distraction. :)

Use MX-Boot-Options to set up Plymouth.

you can't use plymouth on the live system.

and I don't think you can suppress the live boot text messages. most of that stuff is before handoff to the linux init system...
