Love MX but it freezes to often

Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
If other apps are open when Firefox freezes I also can't get into the other open apps. I reboot on freeze. I have updated Firefox but it still freezes.Gordon Cooper wrote: ↑Fri Sep 28, 2018 11:25 pmFreezing is not a common MX problem so there is obviously something wrong.
1.Does it only happen with Firefox ? If so you could delete Firefox and re-install. Or delete and install another browser.
2. Not sure what you mean by 'Even open other other Apps' do you mean opening other Apps when Firefox is running and it still freezes.
3 How do you get out of the freeze. Have to power down and re-start or is Esc enough?
I do not get freezes, do have Firefox installed on my laptop but prefer Palemoon on the main desktop computer.
Gordon.
Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
Sorry for making you wait so long for a response from me. and thanks for the help. it gave me great ideas that I will try.
Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
I'm no expert but looks like you have not a got a swap partition.
I had a similar freezing problem - I had a swap partition defined but it was not enabled
enabling my swap partiton cured my freezing problem
see viewtopic.php?f=97&t=46039#p457249
( you could install a conkey that displays memory usage and keep it visible on your desktop while you use firefox, that way you could see if at the time of the freeze the memory usage is maxed out )

Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
IDK if it's been mentioned in this thread, but trying the Debian 4.9 kernel may also help freezing issues, as long as you don't have the lastest 2018 hardware that requires a newer kernel.
Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
Can't find secure boot in Bios I've added a swap, i just put it at the end of the hard drive, does it correlate with the distro automatically.
Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
No You have to modify your /etc/fstab file, and add:
Check before the UUID of the swap:
Code: Select all
blkid
...
/dev/sda5: LABEL="SWAP" UUID="999-888-777-666" TYPE="swap" PARTLABEL="SWAP" PARTUUID="111-222-333-444"
...
#Entry for /dev/sda5 :
Code: Select all
UUID=999-888-777-666 swap swap defaults 0 0
Code: Select all
mount -a #to reload fstab
sudo swapon -av
ou
sudo swapon /dev/sda5
free # to see if applyed

$ inxi -Fxxxz : System: Host:XEON ... Distro: MX-18_x64 Continuum

Re: Love MX but it freezes to often
When I was new to Linux,
I found myself reinstalling to get back to a working configuration
after I had changed something that broke normal operation.
For me, re-installing was and is an educational experience.
I learned the ins and outs of the installer,
getting a new working install in the process.
Nowadays, I know a few things and methods that can be fixed
to get back to a working installation, but installation is sometimes quicker.
Thanks to the MX-Snapshot tool I install a snapshot to get back to a known state.
I had been looking for that easy to use tool since about 2001.
NOTE: With the snapshot and a separate /DATA partition for all data,
I don't lose any data by reinstalling and the snapshot keeps my configuration.
/home/richard stays on the root install and contains only configuration data.
I often make a backup of parts of /home/richard/.config, just in case.
