Love MX but it freezes to often

#1 Post by jbander » Fri Sep 28, 2018 11:05 pm

Seems to be getting more and more freezes as time goes by , I'm in Firefox when it happens but it all freezes up. Even open other Apps. Its the latest version . There is so many reason for this that I never even know where to start. I'm running a desktop that I built. Any suggestions.

Freezing is not a common MX problem so there is obviously something wrong.

1.Does it only happen with Firefox ? If so you could delete Firefox and re-install. Or delete and install another browser.

2. Not sure what you mean by 'Even open other other Apps' do you mean opening other Apps when Firefox is running and it still freezes.

3 How do you get out of the freeze. Have to power down and re-start or is Esc enough?

I do not get freezes, do have Firefox installed on my laptop but prefer Palemoon on the main desktop computer.

Gordon.

MX Linux is not known for freezing. Start by looking at what changes you made from the stock MX Linux. Did you add any extensions to Firefox and if so, what are they?

Might be sign of developing hardware issue, as for software it might be a bad driver (video usually).

inxi -F might give us an idea...

From DistroWatch reviews:
I beg MX developers pardon ! Some days before, i put a score of 3 at MXLinux, cause black screen and others freezes. It was not the fault of MX, but the fault of "secure boot" of windows !
Is this the problem?

Hello, jbander

I am a little new to MX myself. Can you explain what you mean by '...the desktop I built...' ? What does that mean, exactly?

To better see where can be the issue:

Code: Select all

inxi --full -v 8
... And maybe, you can also try a Antix kernel.
PS: I use Palemoon instead Firefox into my eepc (it consumes less resources - RAM)
$ inxi -Fxxxz : System: Host:XEON ... Distro: MX-17.1_x64 Horizon

As others have said, the first thing is to give the experts here the tools they need to try to help you.

From MX Tools, click 'Quick System Info'. A Terminal will open, display some basic information, and automatically copy it to the clipboard. You can then make a post here, displaying the information in between code tags. (Fifth icon from the left, that looks like this - </>)

I've been using MX 17 from its launch, have it running 16 hours most days doing a variety of tasks, and have never had a freeze. When Firefox locks your system, try Ctrl-Alt-Esc. The mouse pointer will change to a cross. Click anywhere on the Firefox window and it will close. If you are then able to run other programs OK, the problem is with Firefox. In that case, try running Firefox in safe mode to see if it freezes then. If it's OK like that, your problem is an add-on within Firefox.

This information will give you some things to try; please post back for further help.
