Inkjet printer advice needed

#1 Post by devva231 » Tue Aug 07, 2018 4:51 am

I have bought a laser printer (Brother HL-L6200DW) sometime ago, and fairly certain in works with both XP Pro and Linux, even though it has not been connected yet. I also bought an inkjet (Canon Pixma TS9020) which appears I got snookered on, as it turns out to be incompatible with both XP Pro and Linux. It will be consigned to the recyclers, and I will eat the loss. I do not want to repeat that mistake, so I would ask that anyone knowledgeable with printers help confirm my research. Out of a list of 22 Inkjet printers that appear to be compatible with both XP Pro and Linux, I have culled it down to the top five:
Epson Expression ET-2700
'""""""" Expression ET-2600
""""""" Expression XP-640
""""""" Stylus C88+
Brother MFC-J870DW
So far as I can tell, all the above will work with Linux. Whether or not that includes MX Linux, I cannot determine. Would someone please look over the five, and advise me if any will not work (or may not work) with MX Linux 17.1, so that I can eliminate them from consideration? Thanks.

I always go for HP, and I have heard lots of pro Brothers around here, so.. if there is no HP in the list I'd vote for the Brother :)

There are Linux drivers for the Canon Pixma TS9020. Did you try them?

I have HP Envy 5540 and had no problems at all and have installed other HP Envy range printers for other people. Always used Epson previously but because the ink nozzles are in the printer they are prone to drying up and becoming unusable.
My experience with Canon printers has not been good.

I will likely never buy another ink jet printer.
Happy with the Brother laser printer I recently purchased.

No. I run the printer check for Linux first, since it is most likely to give me grief. According to Google research, the only Linux drivers for Canon Pixma TS9020 is those paid ones (Turboprint?), which was acceptable, but when I discovered that XP Pro was not supported, that was the dealbreaker. The Canon junk was sent to the recyclers, and now I am very dang carefully and cautiously looking to buy a replacement. All the remaining choices work with XP Pro, so now I need to be really sure they will also work with MX Linux, so I don't end up wasting more money on more junk.
