In fact the PC was not too bad with MX17.1, it was slow but certainly usable. The single problem that killed off the whole thing was that whatever I tried the audio, in certain situations, remained always slightly choppy. Perhaps I can talk her into getting a newer laptop, used Thinkpads are not that expensive these days and even a Core 2 would be more than enough. I still have the install files on my PC, so reinstalling ain't no big deal.
The last time I used my Netbook years ago it was incredibly slow even then.
I recommend the X220 12" Thinkpad is she likes the small form factor.

The main problem is that I can only try to convince her to do this or that... if she's unwilling then that is that. And the argument is that though the netbook under XP was not a speed demon, it did work for her. As long as she's not prepared to get a slightly faster PC there's not much I can do, short of trying some of the alternatives outlined above if and when time permits.
So thanks for all the input and I'll be back if there are any interesting developments

AntiX 16.3 point release came out after the original MX17. If you're of the "latest and greatest" mindset. I think it is based on Debian Jessie 8.8.
