Waterfox with NoScript,HTTPS Everywhere,Privacy Badger,uBlock Origin.

Then plain Firefox for purchasing or filling in forms online, as I have got into a mess in the past especially with NoScript (disabled for the main website) blocking redirected pages and by the time I have sorted it out not knowing if the order got through or failed.

There are lots of graphical browsers, but surprisingly few rendering engines.
Nearly all of them are based on Chromium, Trident (IE), Gecko (Firefox), Goanna (Gecko Fork), Webkit (Safari), or Blink (Opera)

For example, Vivaldi's underpinning is Chromium, and Pale Moon is based on Goanna.
Remember that smaller isn't necessarily faster. Nor does it mean you'll be pleased with the pages rendered.

If you're just having problems with video, have you thought about a browser that uses an external helper program to stream video? Google Chrome can use VLC to render video streams via a plugin.
VLC Plugin https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/vlc?hl=en

People will tell you this one is faster than that one. I prefer benchmarks. These browsers are easy to install, and the web makes it simple to put them through rigorous tests to see which one(s) are the most performant on your gear.
Here are some useful benchmark sites that will reveal a lot about a candidate :

JetStream https://browserbench.org/ (has other tests that are useful, too)
Kraken https://krakenbenchmark.mozilla.org/
Octane https://developers.google.com/octane/ (retired, but you can still run it)
WebXPRT 3 http://www.principledtechnologies.com/b ... t/webxprt/ (excellent)
HTML5 https://html5test.com/ (tests HTML5 compliance)
Son, someday all this will belong to your ex wife.

You make it sound like apt get doesn't resolve dependencies...

Oh that was me being ignorant. Sorry.

This is a very helpful thread to me, and hopefully it will be to others, too.

i recently installed MX 17.1 on a Dell Inspiron 11 with only 2GB of RAM and a slow Celeron N3050 CPU, and have been struggling with resource utilization. Basically, the system would slow to a crawl, and sometimes "freeze" with too many tabs open in a browser, even with all telemetry shut down, uBlock Origin installed to keep adverts from loading, browser preferences set to block as much as possible, etc.

I had tried multiple browsers including Firefox, Chrome, Opera and more (most of them under browsers in the MX Package Installer) to try and find one that worked better (fewer resources, allowing more tabs, while still handling content like YouTube videos).

Then, I noticed this thread and saw how many of you are using Pale Moon for a browser and installed it. I managed to install most of the extensions I typically use, too (although sometimes I need to click on the "All Versions" link on an extension's page at https://addons.mozilla.org and find a version that did not have a warning about being compatible.

Basically, the Mozilla Extensions download pages think the latest version of Pale Moon is Firefox version 27.0; and some of the newer extensions require at least Firefox 52.0

My install of MX 17.1 on this slow laptop is running much better with multiple tabs open, including one playing video from YouTube, using Pale Moon versus any of the other browsers I tried.

So, thanks to all of you that mentioned using Pale Moon. 'So far, so good, with no freezes/lockups since switching to it (knocking on wood).

For Pale Moon extensions look first here:
https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions/
Some additional hints are available for µBlock Orign, µMatrix and some others.
Please do ask in a separate thread if in doubt.
