I don't think that is the case here. The OP has stated that he has been getting the password prompt which indicates that the card is working. A more likely scenario is that after multiple fails the connect, the wireless card is automatically shut down by the operating system.Both cards are not working, ethernet as well as wireless. The problem seems to be bigger than we thought.
to OrdyChan: as I stated above the fact that you do get the password prompt indicates that your wifi card is working, however I think that this is another case where the router / modem is not staying on point long enough to complete the handshake. Here's a solution that has worked in similar situations. Access your router/ modem and change the wifi broadcast mode for the 2.4 GHz spectrum from the default "mixed mode" to "G only" and try to connect again.
