live-usb-maker won't mount usb drive

#1 Post by WoodLark » Thu Jun 28, 2018 10:22 pm

I am using MX 16.1. After formatting a 64GB USB 2.0 drive as FAT32 using GParted, I attempted to install the MX-17.1_x64.iso to the drive using live-usb-maker. I received the following error message:

"Could not mount /dev/sdi1 at /run/live-usb-maker/main"

So, how many devices do you have? /dev/sdi1 indicates quite a few.

Could you post some system info, please?

Code: Select all

I don't have that many devices, but once I use a removable device, it appears that the OS reserves that device id. If I then use another device, it assigns a new id.

Don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I usually format USB sticks & drives to be used for booting as NTFS and not Fat32. 64 GB sounds more like one of the newer USB sticks, and not an actual drive? Could the problem be related to the way that the USB connection takes place? Are you using a USB hub or are you plugging that drive directly into the USB port of the computer?

try unmounting the device before using live-usb-maker. its sounds to me like maybe your devices might be listed in your fstab if your /dev/sdXY designations are not changing per device. either that, or you've got some sort of udev rule added that sets up persistent naming of devices (we do this with network devices).

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I have tried both directly and through a hub. Same result.

I will try unmounting first to see if that makes any difference...No difference.

I ran live-usb-maker from a terminal so I could geta better look at the messages. Here is what I got after telling it to proceed:

Code: Select all

Press <Enter> to select the highlighted entry
Use 'h' for help, 'r' to redraw, 'q' to quit
>> partition-clear
>> partition-make
Using msdos partitioning
>> makefs-bios
>> makefs-uefi
Error: Could not mount /dev/sdi1 at /run/live-usb-maker/main
I have since found another USB stick (128gb 3.0, although my computer is 2.0) and the live-usb-maker worked perfectly. Obviously, there is some problem with that 64gb USB drive even though gparted had no problem with it. Thanks for your help.

I have a Brinell 64 GB, USB3 that acts that way.
Gparted will format it to FAT32, NTFS, or ext4 whichever you desire.

Using it has generally failed since new.
Copying several GB of files to it rarely completes.
It tends to stop and then no movement for a couple of hours.

Broke it up into smaller partitions, which kinda' defeats the purpose,
and it works sometimes. I try again from time to time over the last 3 years. :)
