Lost wallpaper and right-click on desktop SOLVED

#1 Post by kevtardis » Fri Jun 08, 2018 12:31 am

Recently installed MX 17.1 on a Dell Optiplex without any problem. This is the only OS on the PC. Everything has been working fine.

Today, after a reboot, the desktop background came up as solid gray instead of my maine-sunrise.jpg. If I right-click on the desktop, I don't get a menu. If I go to Setting Manager-> Desktop -> Background and select any background wallpaper, nothing happens. Everything else seems to be working as per normal.

Trying to diagnose the problem, I ran 'inxi -Fxz' and compared the results to the output from the same command run three weeks ago. The results were different.

For example, the old 'inxi' command run three weeks ago showed:

System: Host: MX Kernel: 4.15.0-1-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3
Distro: MX-17.1_x64 Horizon March 14, 2018

the 'inxi' command run today shows:

System: Host: MX Kernel: 4.15.0-1-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 6.3.0 Desktop: N/A
Distro: MX-17.1_x64 Horizon March 14, 2018

Not sure what to make of it, but I'm concerned. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks.

Hmm. Seems ok.

Please print the full system info output for

inxi -Fxz

that you mentioned doing.

Maine sunrise is the default background for MX16. At that time, the wallpapers were stored here: /usr/local/share/backgrounds/MX16 [and then the appropriate subfolder]

In MX17, the wallpapers are in /usr/share/backgrounds.

However, the fact that you no longer can get the desktop rightclick menu is worrying. So I don't thnk it's just a matter of the wallpapers having been moved elsewhere. Did you preserve /home partition from MX16 or another distro when you installed MX17.1?

I think someone more knowledgeable needs to continue from here.

There was this discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=121&t=38787&p=424139&hi ... .3#p424139

about gcc6.3.0 and the liquorix kernel.

So maybe it's some issue with your kernels and their video drivers?

Well I don't know what happened, but it looks like xfce is messed up somehow. If nothing else I can compare the packages on your system to the packages on a working system. If you can provide a list of your installed packages, I'll take a look - you could do:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l > packagelog.txt
and provide packagelog.txt as an attachment

I could also take a look at your apt history and see if I can figure out what happened, if you wanted to you could provide a record of your recent apt history like

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/apt/history.log > aptlog.txt
If your comfortable with sharing that.

To Asqwerth's point, my wallpapers are in another folder. But Setting Manager-> Desktop -> Background is pointed to that folder, and was working fine up until yesterday. I also tried pointing it to /usr/share/backgrounds, and was unable to pull up any wallpapers from that folder either. I had actually modified maine-sunrise.jpg so that it reads 'MX Linux" instead of "MX16".

Rich, attached please find the two files you requested. I appreciate you taking the time to give them a look.

Thank you both for your help so far.

sounds like xfdesktop crashed, or was otherwise shutdown before the session saved one exit.

so open Session & Startup and check to make sure xfdesktop is set to start.

also, use the Session & Startup tool to clear any saved sessions, logout, and login.

you can also run "xfdesktop &" from the terminal, which should start the desktop if its not running.

Appears that was exactly the problem.

I don't see xfdesktop in Session and Startup -> Application Autostart tab, but when I entered 'xfdesktop &' in terminal the wallpaper was restored and my right-click menu is back.

Can I just click on the 'add' button and add a new autostart item called xfdesktop (on the Application Autostart tab)? Or does it go by another name?

Thanks so much!
