need to remind myself which MX version I'm in (SOLVED)

#1 Post by lonesomepoint » Mon May 21, 2018 1:26 pm

Because I currently have both MX-16 and MX-17 installed on their partitions, I have been forgetting which one I'm running at any particular time. Not that I frequently reboot and switch, but if I had a problem and anyone asked me which MX I'm running, I would have no idea. What's a quick way to display which version I'm running? I could use a terminal command if there was nothing else, but I was hoping for something that would display continuously to remind me. Preferably in the panel or the start menu if that can be done.

for a gui option, open up mx-welcome, which will tell you.

for the cli, inxi -F is your friend.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

The terminal command

Code: Select all

lsb_release
with the "-c" or "-r" argument should let you know what version you're running in the command line.

You can also just add the genmon widget to the panel, and change the label that it's showing to whatever release you are running...hmm, let's see how to get rid of the XXX or get it to run that lsb command...perhaps there is another panel widget that you can add that also has a customizable label.

It actually looks like the genmon plugin can do quite a bit. The lsb-release command just needs to be in a script that gets called. https://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel ... mon-plugin

from the CLI you could also use either "lsb_release -d" or "cat /etc/mx-version", and perhaps even include (part of) it in your prompt...

here are a couple visual clues use:
-- include version detail in conky output
-- adopt a convention of using memorable wallpaper or solid color background specific to each flavor
(e.g. antiX16 dark teal, antiX17 burgundy-ish, MX-16 darkblue, MX-17 stock wallpaper...)

Maybe add it as a suffix to your user name; it would then be seen each time you open Whisker.

What I do is similar to skidoo's suggestion: for my MX15 partition (it's fully migrated to 16.1), I use the "Classic" box theme for MX-updater's icon. So at one glance I know it's my "oldest" MX system currently installed.

For MX16 and MX17, I tend to play around with the "Pulse" and "Wireframe" box themes.

Apart from that, my conkies often display the distro version.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

To show MX version within conky I've added this line just below USED-hdd line with the MX-Default conky:
conky_mx_os.png

Code: Select all

${goto 45}${voffset 4}${font Roboto-Light:pixelsize=12}${color2}${execi 3600 head -1 /etc/antix-version}
To show MX version within Grub-Menu like this:
MX 17 Horizon [MX-17_x64 Horizon December 15, 2017]

I've adjusted the grub defaults GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR as shown below

Code: Select all

grep  GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR /etc/default/grub

#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -s -d 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`echo "$(lsb_release -s -d 2> /dev/null || echo Debian) [$(head -1 /etc/antix-version  2> /dev/null)]"`
:puppy:

I think it is simpler just to include a tip in the Whisker menu > Appearance > Panel button
Display = Icon and title
Title = 171
