Newly mounted external drives not recognized

#1 Post by Redacted » Sun May 06, 2018 10:40 am

When I mount usb drives to my plugged usb hub, they will often not be recognized in Thunar, PCManFM, or MX USB Unmounter until I restart the computer. It seems to be random. Sometimes it will be recognized, sometimes not.
Both Thunar and PCManFM are set to automatically mount removable media.
Any ideas? This has happened in previous distros.

Thanks

Does this not happen to anyone?
Or do you all keep your external drives plugged in?
I use mine for backups. Every time I take my computer out of sleep they wake up, and I've heard that's not good for those drives, so I always unplug them after backing up. Is this not necessary?

I haven't had this issue, except when there has been lint in my usb connectors.

Do you experience this problem if you connect directly instead of through the hub?

Does it happen also without using usb-hub plugged in directly into an usb-port?
EDIT: oops same question by D_O some seconds ahead :happy:

I just tried plugging and unplugging directly several times, and it didn't happen.
I feel like a dunce! ::)
I've connected those things I never unmount into the hub.
Thank you very much, D_O and fehlix.

Humor me, go to Synaptic and install Caja with all of it's dependencies. Just search for Caja and nothing else. I had exactly the same problem for years, spradic mounting of USB devices, and most recently my camera which wasn't being mounted by Thunar. I've been using Caja for years and I've *NEVER* had a problem mounting media devices with Caja. It's only 40+ MB with everything that it installs. If it works, then you have an immediate fix. ;)

Well I humored you. There weren't that many dependencies, and
I have no problem with Caja, so I thought "why not try?"
Time will tell.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry, linwinux. It didn't work using Caja.
I plugged in my external drive to the usb hub today, and it wasn't recognized till I rebooted.
So I'll just have to plug them in directly to the computer (which means I have to bend over, grrr). :happy:

Would you mind adding this code

Code: Select all

udiskie -2 -N -q &
to your autostart (under Session->Settings->Autostart)
after having installed udiskie e.g. like this

Code: Select all

# sudo apt-get install udiskie
and perhaps disable automount in Thunar-Settings.
Udiskie can handle probelmatic automaunt situations due to timing issues
of large usb-devices via hub's better than Thunar! :happy:

I've done as you suggested, fehlix.
I'll see what happens over the next couple of days.
Thanks! I really appreciate your help!
