Having a choice for OpenOffice and PaleMoon

#1 Post by Justinian » Sat Mar 10, 2018 4:34 am

MX15 had been on the USB stick system drive of my Centrino Pentium M for months when I botched program removal on Synaptic and then it was goodbye auto login. MX16.1 32-bit was freshly available that time therefore I reinstalled on the stick, 6GB for ext4 system and the rest for home and FAT32.
I started encountering freezing issues on Firefox and regular updates. PaleMoon froze less but after the problem did not go away on its own, I decided to experiment with AntiX-17 Base to judge how this plus the lighter browser and OpenOffice would compare to my MX15 experience on the laptop. The freezing was gone but someone who has been spoiled by the polish of MX would want to go back to being spoiled. By the way there have been no MX17 issues on my Core2Duo desktop where the system is on a SATA drive and the DDR3 RAM is double the laptop's 1GB DDR2. The unit has more muscle so it ran the stick with less freezing.
Before going to my question, I had failed to find the package so I proceeded to download the installer from Apache and try my luck with Terminal:

$ tar -xvzf /home/__/Downloads/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.5_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
$ cd en-US
$ cd DEBS
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
$ cd desktop-integration
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

There it was on the menu and I next contemplated whether it would be possible to get a Base version of MX17.1 later on. I doubt if the MX15Core respin provides an option for PaleMoon and ApacheOffice but I am certain there are users who'd find a smaller iso of this kind useful. I have nothing against Libre and Mozilla but weak machines have powerful reasons to dislike them. Will there be obstacles to adding PaleMoon and OpenOffice as live options in a future release?

PaleMoon is already available from MX Package Installer, and is kept up to date by our packagers. No one has ever asked for OpenOffice AFAIK, but we can look at it for adding to MX Package installer.

From MX live usb with persistence, you could install palemoon from MXPI, and perhaps also install Firefox-ESR to see if its performance is better for you than the latest FF.

Once you've customised your live system to your satisfaction, you could create a snapshot iso or clone to another USB so you have a customised version of live MX17 for your use on other machines.

Curious if anyone (besides me, tentatively, here and now) has ever requested WPS OFFICE?

Not that I can remember, but a Forum search should tell you. I see debs here:

Have you tried installing those?

WPS installs just fine from the .DEBs at that site. I use it and it's a great simple office suite...

Yup, on both MX15/16 and 17.

I am not sure the licence will allow packaging by MX, so the deb files from their site will have to do.

That's why I suggested mxpi.
