MX-17 won't boot up anymore. [solved]

#1 Postby Mauser » Wed Feb 07, 2018 11:27 pm

I have done several boot ups today and everyting was fine. I left my desktop on while watching the original Star Trek episode on my TV. Afterwards I went to watch a YouTube video on my desktop and there was no sound. I clicked on the sound icon in the panel and the mixer was gone. Then I went into settings and it was completely blank. No settings for anything in there. Just an empty control panel. I rebooted the computer and it won't boot. It will show grub then the long list of texts as usual, and then I get a blank black screen with a blinking white horizontal curser. How do I fix this?

can it be the usb-stick fault? nowadays usb-memory stick isn't very reliable, try a different usb-memory stick.
never buy any usb-memory stick more than 32gb, reason they r compressed-data on 32gb.
i brought two 64gb usb-memory sticks, new 64gb usb-stick dead in less than a month.
do a chip scan n found to be 32gb, the other gone in less than a year.
never buy any cheap usb-memory stick from china.
original from yesteryears r still run w/o problem. new ones, failed one after another.

USB-3sticks from REPUTABLE manufacturers greater than 32GB are just fine. I have 8 Sandisk 256GB sticks, 1 Kingston 256GB stick that have been running in a hub connected to a Vizio smart tv for about a year. Other brands that are reliable are Samsung and Mushkin.

It could be something else, from what I understand it actually boots (the scrolling text) but you don't get a useful screen, that could be related to video card driver. What do you use what card do you have can you boot from a stick and post inxi -F.

No no no no. I am not booting from a usb. It's booting from the hhd that it booted fine before for months. I have no stick to boot from. I can't post system information because it won't boot. I see grub fine then all that text info as usual, then it goes black with a blinking white curser on the top left corner. Help.

I can't post system information because it won't boot.

You don't have any flashdrive to boot from and post the info or it doesn't boot from a flashdrive either? You could also tell us what video card you have and what driver you use if you know (like: "I remember I installed Nvidia proprietary driver") it's really not much info to troubleshoot/fix things remotely if you don't give us the basic info.

If you boot from flashdrive you might also be able to examine logs to see what and where goes wrong see what updates you installed lately (in case those caused this issue).

What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-F1 at that screen?

I posted a reply earlier but it disappeared. My keyboard was typing incorrectly. There a notification fromJerry that it was closed but it won't let me view it. My computer can't fully boot up.
