Additional Drivers not working [SOLVED]

#1 Post by davejones » Sun Jan 07, 2018 6:13 pm

It won't start from the menu or application finder. Whenever I run software-properties-gtk as root or a regular user, I get the following error:

Code: Select all

user$ software-properties-gtk --massive-debug
ERROR:root:Cannot import UbuntuDrivers: No module named 'UbuntuDrivers'
WARNING:root:could not open file '/etc/apt/sources.list'

WARNING:root:could not open file '/etc/apt/sources.list'

What do you mean "Additional Drivers?" We don't have any MX program called that.

This:

Code: Select all

ERROR:root:Cannot import UbuntuDrivers: No module named 'UbuntuDrivers'
looks very odd. You know MX is not an Ubuntu derivative, correct?

Software-properties-gtk is in the default debian repositories.
However the authors use only debian & ubuntu version identifiers to populate their lists. Since MX-16 doesn't lie & say it's debian jessie (or MX-17 is debian stretch) their code fails.

Is "Additional Drivers" some sort of Debian GNOME tool, then? Maybe in gnome-software? I don't think you need that in MX--making this an "MX-Y" problem. :p

BTW, installing software-properties-gtk in MX-15/16 messes up Synaptic by setting itself as the default executing binary for /etc/apt/sources.list
This causes Synaptic to report non-existent broken packages and causes its Settings -> Repositories menu entry to fail.

If you have installed software-properties-gtk , use

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --purge software-properties-gtk
to remove it. I haven't tried it, but I suspect software-properties-kde would be problematic as well.

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure I didn't install that... Image

Maybe the

Code: Select all

Nvidia Driver Installer
created it?

Alright, everyone, it seems I made the mistake of installing incompatible software on my MX-17 system. My bad! Already purged the package. Thanks!
