Not that I have much hope for this one, but just to complete the set of possibilities, how about

Code: Select all

i915.modeset=1
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

i915.modeset=1 --> blank screen

sadly, vga=1400x1050 isn't an option for the F7 Console, I tried ask and then did scan to search for options, it wasn't one. I vaguely remember trying something with many resolutions back in antiX alpha test (hard to find old posts after old antiX forum change so I can't find the details) but however that went it didn't work either.

This is a tough one to solve, eh?
Running AntiX-16+17 and MX-16+17 on a variety of ThinkPads in both 32- and 64-bit.

Indeed.
Have you tried booting to a command line? Just add a 3 after the quiet in the text area of grub.
If you can, you can log in as demo and run

Code: Select all

startx
If/when it fails, you can run

Code: Select all

mc
to look at the logs.

when I do 3 --> startx I get:

Code: Select all

xauth: file /home/demo/.Xauthority does not exist

then a bunch of text about x.Org X Server 1.19.2 ... but no ability to type and enter text to start mc

but then I went to get a drink to type this stuff then when I got back it was starting into x (a few minutes, not sure how long)! So MX-17 finally started up.

Here's the log (/home/demo/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log):

Does any of this give any clue to what's going on (or not going on) here?

If I had to guess, I'd say that where grub is loading the first background picture, the screen is in the wrong mode for it so you get the pixelation. Stuff may still be happening back there & if you waited long enough it might boot normally - or maybe not if the graphics adapter got in the wrong state.
Booting into Runlevel 3 skips that picture loading.

At least now you can play with it and install it you wish.

THANK YOU!

OK, so while I was actually in I decided to do an install (gparted made room on the WinXPTablet HDD) updated everything and installed with saving live changes. Everything looked to install normally. Got Grub Menu, chose MX-17, was still in run3 (I guess because saved live changes), did startx, ... waited for about 5 minutes (!) ... then it booted into MX-17 seemingly normally! (and there was much rejoicing).

This is good!

However, having to manually enter startx and waiting 5+ minutes to boot isn't great.

So, used Grub Customizer to remove the 3 from the kernel parameters and rebooted to see if it would start automatically... and the screen goes blank and ... it does boot into MX-17 but it still takes ~5 minutes.

OK, this is a big step forward but so now the problem is how to stop this boot delay?

For comparison, it is basically the same with Thinkpad x61t using 64-bit MX-17 (vs. x60t was 32-bit) but only about 4 minutes to boot not 5 ;) :

So, whatever the issue is for the super-long boot to startx I think it is something with the intel graphics from these 2 very similar laptops.

Does any of this code show why the delay or what could be done to eliminate it?
Running AntiX-16+17 and MX-16+17 on a variety of ThinkPads in both 32- and 64-bit.

that over 4 minutes appear to elapse while setting up the Wacom tablet. This might be a red herring. You'd have to investigate kernel, system, and user logs to see what else was happening during this period.

Well , since you asked what the change between versions might be.

I have experienced on way way way older gear. The difference between versions is XORG and video driver compatibility.

Xorg developers have their own little world. They do not communicate much with Linux video driver builders and maintainers.
At least in my Experience testing on a ancient IBM T23 with Savage graphics chip.

Vesa is my friend on that laptop. I cannot say if it will be friend on yours.
No mention if a md5sum of downloaded ISO was done and how live usb was made either, here.

Just saying. :alien:

Here is my thread on my touchscreen Netbook on AntiX 17. Which is a totally different animal than your X60 and X61.

Thanks for hammering away on your problem. I am sure it will help others.

(hard to find old posts after old antiX forum change so I can't find the details)

Good news ~~ the archive oldforums is now searchable https://antixlinux.com/archive/

...and that search page is now accessible via antixforum.com headerbar navlinks. Click "Forum" in headerbar, then click "Old Forum Archive"
