CPU temp stays at/above 75C at idle, 80C with usage

#1 Post by finickyrelic » Wed Dec 05, 2018 12:06 am

Hello all,

I've been using MX Linux on my mid-2011 Mac mini as I cannot receive OS updates from Apple on this machine. I'm really liking it and I'd like to make the move to using MX Linux full time.

Only issue I have is that when booted into El Capitan, the fan only runs occasionally when performing intensive tasks like exporting JPEGs from RAW image files. But when booted into MX Linux, the fan stays on continuously even when CPU use is near 0%. I feel like this isn't normal, and the reason I say this is that for the last 8 years I don't recall hearing a continuous fan noise like what I'm hearing now.

According to the output from sensors in the Terminal, the "Exhaust" is 2867 RPM.

Is there something I can do to correct this? I can follow instructions, but am not familiar with device drivers in Linux. The graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 6630M.

Here is my system info.

That CPU temp is 87°C, that is 188,6°F, which doesn't make it strange to me that your fan is constantly running.

What does the command top in the terminal give you?

I shut down the machine all night. Upon booting up to MX this morning, the CPU temp was 49 deg C.

After about 20 minutes of leaving it on without any use, the CPU temp was 76 deg C.

Any idea why the CPU would run so hot without the machine actively being used? This Mac mini is one that has discrete AMD graphics but I believe does not have switchable graphics.

Here is the output from top:

Re: CPU temp stays at/above 75C at idle, 80C with usage

#4 Post by finickyrelic » Fri Dec 07, 2018 12:17 pm

After having tried several distros (MX 17.1, Debian stretch, Ubuntu 18.04, Puppy Linux), it seems something about the 2011 Mac mini (Macmini5,2) is unique. No matter which distro, the CPU temp consistently remains in the 70s when running Linux, and in the 50s-60s when running OS X El Capitan.

I am not sure if it is the AMD Radeon HD 6630M discrete GPU that is causing the high CPU temp or something else.

I am hesitant to switch to MX full time because I don't know if continued usage at such a high temperature will cause hardware issues. I don't typically turn my machine off for weeks.

If anyone has suggestions or knowledge about this, I would be very thankful.

Maybe you can try to check again with inxi ? (wait 5 minutes after startup) if the temp. are the same.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fz -v 8

Code: Select all

Yeah, Linux as a whole runs hot on Macs...it was a similar story on my Macbook Pro. MX has tlp installed by default to help with thermals. However, another tool you can install that works hand-in-hand with tlp is thermald (it's easily available in the stable section of the Package manager) -- I always had it installed on any of my Macs running Linux. Give it a go and see if it helps you out.

There's another tool that you can use as well called cpufreq, that allows you to manually scale your processor, but I don't have experience with it, so I'm not sure if you only need the indicator-cpufreq install from the Package manager to make it work, or if cpufreqd is required as well -- hopefully someone else knows.

Your kernel is Kernel: 4.15.0-1-amd64 x86_64 bits, so I suggest you to try the 4.19 kernel (with power saving improvements) via mx-packageinstaller , favorites/kernel tab/item.
... And/or, as derrotmax said; thermald (it's easily available in the stable section of the Package manager), but I have not tested.

Re: CPU temp stays at/above 75C at idle, 80C with usage

I'm pretty sure you're only going to see Performance and Powersave as cpufreq options with our backported Debian kernels, since they will be using the pstate power management instead of cpufreq, but you can install the Liquorix kernel and the indicator for cpufreq, since those kernel still use cpufreq by default and the indicator will show many more options.

There's a kernel boot command to boot without pstate, and then the Debian kernels will switch to cpufreq, but I forget it offhand...but let's see if Liquorix makes any difference.

thermald seems to make no difference.

After just opening a few websites in Pale Moon, CPU temp is at 76C.

I will have to read up on how to change kernels.
