[Solved] Qt version in MX 16.1

#1 Postby greyowl » Sat Aug 12, 2017 10:33 am

I checked DistroWatch on MX 16.1. It says that the Qt version is 4.8.6. Is this correct?
The current version of Qt is 5.9.1. Some applications are now requiring Qt 5.4.1 and higher.
Is it likely that future versions of MX will upgrade the Qt version?

I think MX16.1 will be kept in sync with Jessie (probably too troublesome to update important libs it would break too many programs), while MX17 will use whatever Qt version Stretch is using.
However the packaging team might offer newer version in "test" repo, but I cannot speak for them .

MX15/16 use qt 5.3 , but a lot of our apps are targeted to the 4 series.

Thanks for the information.
When is it expected that MX17 will be available?

4.8.6 is the Qt 4 version. Currently Qt 5 is 5.3.2 in our Jessie base. If you need a program that requires a newer Qt 5, you might be able to find it in a format that bundles those libraries in a container. An example would be the AppImage for Qupzilla, or the manual install of Calibre from the developer's website. Flatpaks may also be available.

I do have an experimental build of Qt 5.5 that's compatible for the most part with MX 15/16, but it will boot out certain apps that are tied to the specific version of Qt 5 they were built upon, and they then need to be rebuilt upon the newer Qt.

Qt 5.6 would then need to be built using Qt 5.5, and then Stretch's Qt 5.7 would need to be built using Qt 5.6, but I haven't tried that yet in that repo. There's 30 packages that were needed for just 5.5.

Edit: some applications, such as qBittorrent or VLC, can be built against Qt 4 or 5. For many of those, we prefer to use Qt 4 because of some quirks we experience when they are built against Qt 5 5.3.2. These quirks seem to be gone in Stretch's 5.7.
