Thinkpad x200 7458-7BU 2009. Has LibreBoot modified BIOS (https://libreboot.org/) and everything is still working fine with MX.

A minor point perhaps, but I do wish that there were more up-to-date LTS GNU kernels (and in fact 4.14 LTS, in general, for some reason doesn't get the same love as the 4.9 LTS kernels, I dunno maybe a Debian thing?) with MX.

Thinkpad T61p 6457-5KU 2008. Everything running great with MX. Nothing unusual about this one besides an upgraded processor (T9300 vs. T7700) the rare early widescreen.

Works great under either the open source or new or old proprietary NVidia graphics drivers (I've pasted all 3 versions in the inxi below), I didn't see a reason to bother with the Intel Graphics:

Open Source:

Thinkpad T601pF FrankenPad based on a 8890-A96 but heavily modified 2007/2008. As usual MX runs great.

This is a very unusual Thinkpad hybrid, a FrankenPad, T60p and T61p combined. Also, here I'm running it from an old classic SLC SSD the UltraBay instead of the main drive bay (which has Windows 7 SP1).

So instead of dual-booting from different partitions on the same drive, this dual boots from a separate hard drive entirely. Moreover, it is very easy and fast to swap out the UltraBay SSD to another laptop to bootfrom there (similar in a way to a usb flash drive). Also, since it is swapped between different computers I haven't used the NVidia proprietary graphic driver but just used the open source drivers.

Re: Thinkpads

#44 Post by Hierax_ca »

Thinkpad x301 2776-3CU 2009.

Thinkpad x301 works great in MX but there is one problem: the is the optical drive doesn't work in antiX and MX (despite trying a lot of things suggested by BitJam who kindly tried hard to help me way back in, I think, antiX15/MX15) but it does work in Linux Lite. So I've done 3 different things to make it useful:
- 1) use different distro for a functional Optical DVD drive;
- 2) use Battery in UltraBay for travel;
- 3) use HDD/SSD in UltraBay for extra data storage.
The only other thing to note is this is one of the least convenient UltraBays as it requires a screw to hold in place, still very flexible just not just as quick to swap as other Thinkpads.

inxi -dxxx on another unit (2776-3AU) using Linux Lite 4.0 :

Code: Select all

Optical-1: /dev/sr0 model: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-844 rev: RC05 dev-links: cdrom,cdrw,dvd,dvdrw
           Features: speed: 24x multisession: yes
           audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram state: running
So when using MX Linux I've used the UltraBay for either a Battery:
inxi -Bxxx on another unit (4057-WXP) also using MX-17.1

Code: Select all

Battery:   ID-1: BAT0 charge: 23.4 Wh condition: 25.7/43.2 Wh (59%) volts: 12.5/10.8 model: SANYO 42T4643
           type: Li-ion serial: 594 status: Charging
           ID-2: BAT1 charge: 22.1 Wh condition: 22.8/24.4 Wh (93%) volts: 12.2/11.1 model: SONY 42T4642
           type: Li-ion serial: 3660 status: Unknown
or use the UltraBay for an additional HDD/SSD, works fine with one UltraBay (but have 2 duds that don't fit quite right -- not sure if just my bad luck or a common problem) :

Also, to note the regular HDD/SSD of a Thinkpad x301 is an annoying 1.8" which is limited in size, is rare / hard to find, and expensive. So I've gone with upgrading it using the mSATA adapter (Aleratec again), this has worked for me with various Crucial, Micron, Plextor, Samsung, and SanDisk drives.

Any thoughts as to a possible BIOS or other setting that might cause the failure to recognize
the HDMI port, please?

Thinkpad x200 Tablet (x200t) 7450-9RU 2010. Working mostly fine with MX now (except for the Tablet Rotation) but was the major boot delay graphics problem that was successfully fixed (see below):

However, like all Tablets the Thinkpad x200t still has the substantial rotational issue where the pointer doesn't align with the screen when the display is rotated (see above in my x60t notes)!

Thinkpad T500 2056-W1Z. Has LibreBoot modified BIOS (https://libreboot.org/), pretty much the most powerful Laptop you can do LibreBoot/CoreBoot with, and everything is still working fine with AntiX 17.1 (likely would be the same with MX but I only have one of these and it's antiX). So, if you're looking for a Libre laptop this is the kinda thing you should get and antiX/MX is a great match for it!

Again, as mentioned above, I do wish that (not complaining, just hoping that) there were more up-to-date LTS GNU kernels (latest seems to be 4.14.12-gnu-antix 2018-01-07).

Usually use with Ethernet but Wireless works OK (not great) and can easily and fully be disabled with the Thinkpad's hardware kill switch as befits a Libre laptop.
