Thinkpads

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

I wanted to signal a new Wiki page on Thinkpads that comes from notes made by heirax_ca (thanks!) during MX-15 Beta 2 testing.

https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/thinkpads

We would like to bring that up to date for MX-15 Final, as well as add any other models that people have tested. Please post any changes/additions/corrections in this thread and we will update the Wiki page.

TIA
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

It might be worth bearing in mind that IBM, Lenovo and DELL et al ship identical models with varied hardware. A listing of what MX works with needs at the very least the model of wireless card, and the type of graphics card, to be truly useful.

It would also be easier to understand if the information were to be presented in the form of a table, IMHO.

OK. That info was in the original notes, but I was trying to get the page up and left it out. When I get some time, will redo and put back in...

As well as Thinkpads, I think it would be a good idea if we got feedback from other laptops, netbooks.

So if you are using MX-15 (or antiX?) on a laptop or netbook, please add it to the hardware section at the wiki.

I'll get some updated notes for you on how the Final MX-15 versions (short answer = even better) ...

If you have a Format/Template you'd like me to use I'd be happy to fill it out that way so you don't have to waste time reformatting...

Thanks again to everyone for all of your hard work on this great distribution!

Oops, you don't! The Wiki is only open to the Dev Team for writing.

Try these instead:

For MX-15 Final:

W500 had major issues with the Radeon switchable graphics and the 4.2.3 Kernel but works great with the 4.2.0 and the 4.3.x -- that was the biggest beta problem (since install utterly failed) and it is now solved!

Main problem is lack of Pen/Tablet support on various models -- e.g., x61t, x200t (one day I'll find the time to figure out how to configure it to work, I know it's possible but it'll take some work).

Also, the x301, while the USB install works great, has an additional DVD issue: even XFBurn doesn't work with it either, for example, it's an outlying anomaly I know and not much can be done about it (BitJam tried a LOT to help), so this one I'll probably leave off on until MX-16 maybe 4.4 Kernel or Debian Stretch will fix whatever the heck the issue is.

Minor Updates:

MX-15 (and Antix-16) is working great for the vast majority of my computers and I'm extremely pleased to have found such an amazing OS in MX! There only a few outstanding issues:

x301 I tried to install on a few other x301s to see if it might only be that CD drive, but sadly they all failed so I'm leaving that model as an Ubuntu only one, even the Alphas of the next Debian have the same issue :( oh, well.

W700ds (dual screen) Linux out-of-the-box can't seem to handle the 2nd screen properly (tried several distros all failed) but Windows7 works just fine so just using that for now. This is a very unusual rare computer so it's not unexpected to run into trouble with this odd configuration. I'll have to look at this more later...

x61t: However, good news is somehow I got the tablet pen working on my Thinkpad x61t SXGA+ (maybe simply adding xserver-xorg-input-wacom did it?) and, fwiw, xournal is a very useful tablet tool (testing pdf annotations now!). Still can't figure out how to get the screen to Rotate yet (the hardware buttons for it don't seem to do anything), but this is huge progress getting the pen input working, still have to see about other tablets (x200t + x220t) but this is a very good sign!

Anyone else already solved the Tablet Rotation and Dual-Screen configuration issues?
