I've been living with these irritations for a while but it's time to seek solutions.
As possible relevant background this MX-16 Xfce with Kwin (https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=41597).
1> The mouse pointer (white arrow) frequently changes to a black cross. This seems to be invoked when a menu is invoked. It usually stays as black cross until I click elsewhere?
2> Screelets. Despite Autostart ot Login being checked in Screenlets Manager and them also showing in Settings and Startup, they don't!? The daemon, however, does so have to relaunch by right clicking the tray icon (which is when the black cross mouse pointer first manifests itself).
A couple of niggles
Re: A couple of niggles
Haven't used Kde in years, but here are some ideas about why.
Perhaps someone will come along who knows how to fix these peculiarities.
1> This sounds like the Kill applet. used to kill a runaway application from the MX Xfce4 menu. If you click the black X on a miscreant or any other application it will be killed. Could be crossed somewhere with Kde, er, Kwin.
2> Screenlets. Probably because it is set up for LightDM?

Re: A couple of niggles
It's not Kde but Xfce using Kwin as the window manager (instead of Compiz).Haven't used Kde in years, but here are some ideas about why.
Never had anything to do with LightDM. Screenlets work fine except that they don't autostart.Screenlets. Probably because it is set up for LightDM?
Re: A couple of niggles
Yes, you are correct.
Applets are started in MX via XfceWM.
Can you run XfceWM & Kwin together?
Can Xfce applets be set up to autostart under Kwin?
Regards.

Re: A couple of niggles
Screenlets will work in any (or most) desktop environments. In this case it is xfce desktop and kwin as the window manager. And two window managers can't exist simultaneously. Kwin replaces Xfwm4. Do not confuse DE with WM.
I believe the problem here is that autostart sequence tries to launch the selected screenlets before the daemon-
or
The autostart command for the individual screenlets requires a path and/or parameters.

Re: A couple of niggles
Googling for 'how start xfce applets at boot in kwin' gave a few hints to make them start at boot: (I hope)
and 'how use kwin with xfce'

You may have come across this already. It is a real how-to-do-it:

UPDATE 09/05/2014: For anyone who may have an issue with KWin being autostarted in Xfce, one of our readers "Goe Gol" left a comment detailing the fix:
"Since this morning however XFCE no longer starts. I get the desktop background but no panels. When I remove kwin from autostart, it works fine. I can then start it manually from a terminal with kwin --replace but via autostart it won't work anymore. Any ideas why this might be?
[...]
Solved my own problem. I enabled and disabled automatically save session, but it still remembered a saved session. I had to clear all saved sessions."
