Cinnamon on LMDE 3 with most of the effects turned off idled at 610 mb ram use. I like Cinnamon best when I have around 4gb of ram because it is heavier overall than Xfce, but I have run Cinnamon on 2 gb ram, though wouldn't recommend it for 2 gb ram when Xfce is lighter on low ram. Yet Cinnamon has become quite nice.

I agree, it's quite nice, I liked how it looked when I briefly tried it and it seems like all things worked as they should.

With both Mint Cinnamon 17 and 18, I would boot at 700 mb ram and quickly rise above 900.
And that was with effects disabled. I was never able to lower it to what others said.
The same happened a couple of weeks ago when for fun I tried out Cinnamon on MX.
It's pretty, but like Adrian said, I'm at home now with XFCE.

I have used/tested both the old and the new Cinnamon, as issued by Mint in their various spins including LMDE3Beta.
subjectively, the new version is noticeably faster.
maybe it is just the way Mint packages it, I don't know or much care. It does not appeal to me.

PS: in a T61 Thinkpad it was so slow I thought that old 5400 RPM HDD had failed... that test was Very short ;-)

Just installed MX today, on USB for now, and its been amazing!
Used Synaptic Package Manager to install Cinnamon DE: ran cinnamon is search, then selected cinnamon-desktop-environment from list, mark for install (as with the pop-up window for other needed items), and then apply. No command prompt needed...
Looks good so far and will probably test more on a SSD tomorrow – excellent OS!

OS – MX 18.3 Continuum (x86-64)
Cinnamon Version – 3.2.7
Linux Kernel – 4.19.0-5-amd64
Processor – Celeron G4900 @ 3.10GHz x 2
Memory – 15.5 GiB
Hard Drive – 27.3 GB (actually a USB flash drive)

I've tried this, the nmgtk fix above worked for me.

One problem I still have is that I can't download the additional panel applets. The ones already installed work.
