Re: Audio problems (Solved)
Re: Audio problems (Solved)
MX-15 64-bit Trinity Desktop Environment fully updated with XFCE removed
I do not have audio when using VLC. An error message appears:" Audio output failed: The audio device "default" could not be used. Connection refused."
I have tried VLC>Tools>Preferences>Audio>Output Mode and tried Automatic, Pulse Audio, Alsa, etc. Nothing helps.
I do have audio when using my browser. When I go to Pulse Audio Volume control, a window opens and states: "Establishing connection to Pulse Audio. Please wait..." The connection never establishes. If I need to tweak the volume control on an online Youtube video, I cannot use PAVC.
However, when i reboot, PAVC is able to access Pulseaudio for a little while before crashing again. Sometimes, it connects to ALSA.
I've tried reinstall everything Pulse from synaptic.
'pulseaudio --check' from CL gives no output
'pulseaudio --start' from CL gives no output
'killall pulseaudio -9 && pulseaudio --start' from CL gives no output
If I logout login, it does no good. If I reboot, then pulse will behave for a few minutes.

Re: Audio problems
Hi
Firstly I am not sure why you removed pulseadio and then whether you installed it correctly. So if you don't mind let me suggest a few things to you and then you decide if its worth trying.
PA=pulseaudio
step 1 clean up and correctly remove PA
Note the asterix at end of command. It will remove some sound stuff but it won't remove ALSA. And we can then do some further checks.
step 1b May not apply....remove any .config/pulse from your home dir....as a local user
step 2 full reboot and post the output of ...as a local user
and take a screenshot of
thats a zero not an O for orange as alsa counts cards/devices from zero.
Leave open terminal at mixer levels for step 3 resuls
step 3 go in web browser to your fav site and make sure you have sound if not unmute mixer level with
m key to mute or unmute
and use page up or down to quickly raise volumes or use up/down arrows to adjust
use left/right arrows to get to next control
step 5
to attempt to stop sound from stopping even tho we no longer have PA try this
right arrow to that pink setting and down arrow to choose disabled
step 6
Now press ESCape key to exit alsamixer assuming you can hear sound at correct volumes then we save that setting for alsa
step 7
go into vlc .....tools -> preferences -> audio -> pulldown audio output (You seem to know this area well) and choose alsa
don't forget to click on save.
Comment 1 by deleting PA you won't be able to use mx-system-sounds ....and I am not sure if want them or not
Comment 2 Once we have sound working with alsa only....with no interference from PA you can then try to regain PA with this command
which will re-install PA and some other bits.

Re: Audio problems
Thank you aus9 for trying to help. Unfortunately, i have now lost all sound.
I followed you instruction except for the last part about reinstalling PA.
I have all the outputs to max and nothing is muted. I have lost sound with my browser in YouTube.
I also tried Step 7. But, i still have no sound in VLC.
Edit: Automute is disabled.

I'm having difficulty uploading an image of alsamixer as you requested. When I try, I get an error message. I tried using GIMP to convert the Ksnapshot png to a jpeg. It still won't upload.$ inxi -Axxx

Re: Audio problems
Just to make sure this isn't a hw issue, I rebooted with a LiveDVD. I had audio when using the LiveDVD.
Re: Audio problems
Hi
good you have sound with live dvd.
It would be handy for you to have a screenshot of a working sound alsamixer as well don't you think?
but you will have pulseaudio as a front end. So I assume you did a MX tools -> setup -> select sound ? or what did you do? was sound working out of the box or did you need to unmute etc somethng in PA volume control?
2) Unfortunately I want a full screen shot.
Open terminal and maximise it pls.
MX menu -> all -> screenshot > select active window and choose Imgur which will give you forum copy strings.
3) If we know you have no interference from any asound config files, it should be safe for you to re-install PA but I will wait for your reply.
Leaping ahead, the other thing is you may have changed your phonon settings on hard drive. I don't use KDE and phonon but this guide might help?
https://userbase.kde.org/Phonon
4) but knowing you can get sound from a live MX means we will solve this!

4) but knowing you can get sound from a live MX means we will solve this!
Re: Audio problems
I did not do "apt-get install mx-event-sounds" when I posted.
I did do 'apt-get install mx-event-sounds". PA installed.
I went to Select Sound and a window appeared informing me that I only have one soundcard. I clicked OK.
PAVC still will not make the connection to device.
I went to Multimedia>Alsamixergui and fiddled around a bit. When I dragged the bars for Front Mic upward, I started to hear pink noise coming out of my speakers. Btw,. there is no microphone on this system.

I now have sound when browsing to YouTube. Btu, I still do not have sound from VLC. I tried setting VLC to use ALSA, Pulse< Automatic. "Connection refused."
As for the other screenshot, it did capture the whole screen.
Thanks,
-Joe

Re: Audio problems
Ok well thats a start.
Lets confirm something as you now have PA back on your system. If PA is correctly installed you should not see your sound card mixer stuff but a card called pulseaudio
No need for screenshot I trust you!...Just confirm it by note we drop the card number stuff.
2) now that we have PA and alsa ....and lets not forget you have phonon as well, strictly speaking if you see the card called pulseaudio you should only need to try automatic or pulseaudio in vlc.
2b) but even tho you posted your original hw info can you now redo it in case we have a gremlin please with either phonon or PA.
just show and report if inxi -Axxx is still the same, only post if it differs please
3) now the SDPDIF setting in this image
http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/downloa ... ew&id=8773
see how its turned on? go back to the pulseaudio volume control last tab called config and
if you see in any pulldown hdmi....probably top pulldown.....select off
and in any pulldown (for the moment no surround sound) for the analog ....select analog stereo output....not the duplux one
3b) retest sound in browser without a reboot as PA is supposed to make changes on the fly pls
3c) retest sound in vlc using either automatic with a save or pulseaudio with a save pls
good luck and leaping ahead.....if 3b is good but 3c is bad.....go back to alsamixer....and mute spdif and retest without exitting alsamixer and the unmute and retest and report.
spdif and hdmi....often are cousins and some cards need to be tricked for PA to play fair.
