I think you should quit chasing any phonon packages--they are part of the KDE 4/Qt 4 framework, and don't have anything to do with TDE, which is KDE 3 / Qt 3.
Does VLC throw any error messages when you run it from a terminal? I.e "vlc filename"
Also double check that you are using a Debian or MX version of VLC, not one from deb-multimedia, which has been known to cause problems in the past. Or other deb-multimedia packages can create issues, too. You also might want to check with another media player, such as mplayer or mpv, to see if the same audio problems occur for them, or it's just VLC.

I removed XFCE:
apt-get purge xfconf xfce4-utils xfwm4 xfce4-session thunar xfdesktop4 exo-utils xfce4-panel xfce4-terminal
I installed minimal TDE:
apt-get install tdebase-trinity
Please don't bork your own system. I can simply do a reinstall. I was hoping to avoid it. But, it's probably for the best.

xfce4 doesn't take up much room on the hard drive at all; I believe TDE is still considerably larger. Try just adding TDE without removing anything, and see if that works better.

The reason I removed XFCE is because of the XFCE apps that duplicate the same functions clogging up the TDE Menu.

this is a start of my learning curve for TDE.
Stevo thanks for pointing out that I was wrong to mention phonon which is another of my mistakes in thinking TDE was KDE. TDE uses Arts but anyhow here is my dribble.
1) I used the wiki to install the full TDE package rather than the cut down. Not sure if that is good trouble shooting but I never lost sound in booting into TDE
Here are some things I checked. Notice I am using a external screenshot hosting site and not attaching.
to not use attachments try this to take a screenshot.... menu -> utilities -> screenshot
after choosinng the option you want it will offer Imgur and then you can copy the forum tag etc
^^ Ensure box to enable sound is checked and click apply and then click button to test sound. Sound for me works out of the box and I have PA still installed.
2) click the hardware tab in TCC and choose alsa clcik apply
3) Do not click menu -> multimedia -> no icon audio mixer as its crappy and reminds me of the alsamixergui.
Instead choose Kmix....pulldown and choose your analog sound card and not the PA
max out the output volumes
4) Now in Kmix pulldown the PA setting and use that as the master volume and set that volume to whatever is comfortable for you
You should now have a speaker icon in the panel and left click it for a RH mouse user should allow fast vol changing or muting.
Kmix settings allows you to undock the panel item if you don't want it. Notice that I still have PA installed but am not using it to control the mixer per se
Kmix is using PA rather than me using the PA vol control panel. Hope that makes sense to you.
5) MX start up sounds
click menu -> settings -> Mx system sounds
^^ tick the box for session sounds login
I have hovered the mouse over the full default pathway to sound file
click the button with 3 dots to play the sound you want........click apply if you have made any changes pls
6) MX select sound device
menu -> system -> MX select sound
pulldown if offered choose analog...click apply
click test sound
sound is from the /usr/share/sounds/alsa folder if interested

Kmix settings allows you to undock the panel item if you don't want it. Notice that I still have PA installed but am not using it to control the mixer per se
Kmix is using PA rather than me using the PA vol control panel. Hope that makes sense to you.
5) MX start up sounds
click menu -> settings -> Mx system sounds
^^ tick the box for session sounds login
I have hovered the mouse over the full default pathway to sound file
click the button with 3 dots to play the sound you want........click apply if you have made any changes pls
6) MX select sound device
menu -> system -> MX select sound
pulldown if offered choose analog...click apply
click test sound
sound is from the /usr/share/sounds/alsa folder if interested
Don't forget any changes click apply to any of above

when I run htop and do a search...pulseaudio should appear and search for arts and artsd should appear.A key component of aRts was the sound server....(snip) ....It was a direct competitor to PulseAudio

I lost sound in VLC again . It was working perfectly yesterday. Today after rebooting. VLC has no sound. Yes, I re-attempted the various possible solutions discussed here.
