It may have been something as simple as getting Dolphin to 'look' at the Trash so it knows what's in there.

Well I did use Dolphin to look in /home/.local/share/trash.

I had the same problem. Tracked it down to ~/.local/share/Trash/metadataPost # 343488

I essentially did the same thing, and it works well in most cases. But I never did solve the trash full problem.
